I read Phalaex's post, and immediately googled "Phantom console"

This link turned up:
http://www.generalrubbish.com/2009/04/phantom-console-exists-launching-with-duke-nukem-forever.html

hilarious! But i'm not quite sure if it's a joke or just a really hopeful blogger...

Still, if you want to preorder one...

They are both great consoles. But in my opinion I think you should go for the ps3 slim, it is cheaper in the long run. Plus it has notable games that are out or soon to be released like MGS 4, Killzone 2, Resistance 1+2, Ratchet, Uncharted 1+2, Little Big Planet, MAG, GT 5, Final Fantasy 13 versus, inFamous, and who could forget God of War 3. I have nothing agianst 360 im planning on buying one when i actualy have enough. ps3 is worth it.

There's cases for games on both systems. And, since you are posting on a game development forum I'd say go for Xbox 360 because of the XNA Creators Club.

There's 250,000 people(including me) that are on H3's live every day so lets not start an arguement that will go nowhere and get this thread locked, like this one:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=118185&b=2

(I just guessed there would be a thread about halo being over-rated, and it was locked too lol)

Can you please explain how a PS3 is cheaper in the long run?

Here's my example of PS3 being more expensive:

My 360 ,which cost about $400au, RRODd after the standard 1 year warranty had expired. But because it was the RROD (which is what accounts for the majority of 360 deaths) the warranty is extended to 3 years. So i was still under warranty. Microsoft paid p&h all I had to do was pay for the box to put it in (this is Australia, apparently US Microsoft even pay for the box) which cost me about $5au... I took my hard-drive off boxed it up and sent it away.

2 weeks later I have my console back, a complimentary month of live and a working console.

My friend bought a PS3 at launch, so that cost him $999au. His PS3 died after about 18 months. That is out of the 1 year warranty. He phones up Sony and is told that it will cost $300 to repair, payable in advance. So he pays the $300, also pays for the postage himself and waits 1 month. His console is returned, he plugs it in and it still didn't work. I realise the chances of this happening much be incredibly small but it happened. So he sent it back, and was told that they couldn't fix the problem so they would send him a new console. Unfortunately they don't sell the launch models anymore, so he wouldn't be able to have backwards compatibility with his PS2 games now.

So he now has a brand new working console. No save games as all were on the original's internal hard-drive, although it has been pointed out to me that even if he did get his console back the saves would have been lost too. So not only did it cost him $300 to get repaired but all the time he invested into this games was gone too.

This might not be what you meant by cheaper in the long run. In my example though, it's clearly the 360 which worked out cheaper.

As I stated right at the start of this thread. You should pick the console which has the exclusive games you want to play. I chose the 360 and haven't been disappointed. I would love to own a PS3 but even with the price drop it's still too expensive for me to contemplate.

PS3 all the way, without a doubt. I haven't had any problems and I've had it for nearly 2 years, great games for it and many more will soon follow. Plus you can play on the PS3 without causing an Earthquake with the jet-engine-like-sound-output of the 360. Note: I know the Elite version is quieter, before any militant 360'ers jump in there. I wouldn't bother with the slim version either, just get the standard version.

Both have advantages and disadvantages, my personal preferences falls well within the PS3 base. As a side note Killzone 2 is an awesome game, everybody I've heard say any different didn't have any good reasons at all (unless they don't like that genre of course). Well they thought they did until the flaws in their logic were exposed.

This is one of the games I'm gutted on missing out on by having a 360. I loved the first game, and the PSP version. The Helghast are an awesome enemy, I enjoyed killing them as much as the Combine.

I would also love a PS3 to play God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank and Little Big Planet.

Yeah but I wanted Alan Wake, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Banjo_kazooie, Crackdown, Dead Rising, Fable 2, Gears of War, GTA IV DLC, Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gothem Racing, Too Human and various XBLA games more.

There are only 4 PS3 exclusives I want to play compared to the 12 on the 360.

What do you guys think of Mass Effect, now that you've played it? I have it for the PC, I found it interesting but I completed it in just a few hours, I was a bit guttered when I finally killed that bloke/thing/catperson. Good ending though with the whole space station thing going on (no spoiling).

By completed you mean you just followed the main story path, yes? Because it's wouldn't be possible to do all of the quests in the game in a few hours.

It's one of my favourite games of all time. I loved every minute of it and started my second play through as soon as the credits finished rolling on my first. I enjoyed the story and how epic it all was. The combat could have been a bit better but nothing game breaking.

I'm going to do another play through soon.

I really enjoyed it, I had the PC version, but sadly I was on of those people whinging in the tech support forum and finding that I could find no good solutions to make the game run smoothly, hence I nabbed the 360 version.

It didn't take me a few hours, but perhaps shorter than some. Good plot, good interaction, good game play - I got board of some of the same environments being repeated, what I mean is, a lot of the interiors looks the same, EG some of the bases. The menu wasn't always snappy on either version I played, but I can't wait for Mass Effect 2, it'll be interesting to see how well they adapt your old save, though I'm definitely avoiding any PC versions this time.

Yeah I didn't do many of the side missions, I don't know whether this is because I was too engrossed in the story that I didn't want to stray away from it, or because the side missions that I come across (I didn't actively hunt them out) was the same old my [INH] has gone missing go find it.

It was a good game though, I enjoyed what time I had with it.

I think 360 is better. It has a good Live and most of your freinds have it so duh.(It's also American.)

As for mass effect I thought it was cool but it was a little hard to figure out where to go and a tiny bit repeatetive.

If ever there was a solid argument not to get a 360, that was it right there. So much wrong in so few words.

Swings and roundabouts, PSN is free but apparently lacking compared to the subscription based Live, you pays your money and takes your choice me supposes.

I dont think everyone here has said that the xbox is better

from what i gather

1) Xbox is totally unreliable
2) Xbox is ridiculously overpriced

Ok lets compare prices for what ill need...

Xbox
Console - £200
Wireless Adapter - £60
Extra Controller - £35
Batteries And Chargers - £30 (£15 each)
wireless headset - £28
Live subscription - £40

Ps3
Console - £250
Extra Controller - £35

As wireless, batteries and chargers are included with the ps3, i have a bluetooth headset, and PSN is free...

So Totals...

PS3 - £285
Xbox - £393

For me, the choice is quite clear.

Well the 360 isn't totally unreliable, it's just a good number of people have had problems, but they get deal with - newer consoles are meant to be much more stable. And the most I've probably spend on the 360 and its equipment is £220 (Premium, extra controller, insurance) I've not signed up to XBL.

Quote: "wireless headset - £28"

This should come with the console, at least mine did and mine's the model down. You can buy extras gradually at least. £250 for a PS3 was too much for me at the time of purchase (not that it would have hindered my choice, after-all I wanted a 360 anyway)

Live is meant to be good for its other features, but if you just want to play multiplayer, £40 a year might still be too much. I love the selection of games you can buy from the XBLA.

But it seems you've made up your mind, which is good. The PS3 is a decent console, my parents have one and I use it to play exclusive titles, though in our collection that only consists of Little Big Planet (awesome game) and GT5: Prologue, but still good.

Wireless headset is not included.

I'm not going for the premium or pro, i want a big hard drive, im even considering the 250gb ps3 now My main problem with the 360 is the reliabilty though. People are saying its taking just a week for it to be repaired, but my friend sent his away to germany got it back a month later, it hadnt been repaired, but had a letter with it, explaining they wouldnt repair it, because it had been tampered with.

It hadn't.

Personally, I hate microsoft, they are a complete rip off.

Odd. Well, I suppose technically the one I've got is wired, but it connects to the controller, so it doesn't plug into the 360 at all, so as my main controller is wireless, it doesn't make a difference.

As for stability, I've never heard of them refusing to fix it or making claims like that, but most complaints I've heard is, "Oh crap, it RROD'd", which I'm dreading, I've had my 360 since April, so I'm doing good.
