Can you please explain how a PS3 is cheaper in the long run?
Here's my example of PS3 being more expensive:
My 360 ,which cost about $400au, RRODd after the standard 1 year warranty had expired. But because it was the RROD (which is what accounts for the majority of 360 deaths) the warranty is extended to 3 years. So i was still under warranty. Microsoft paid p&h all I had to do was pay for the box to put it in (this is Australia, apparently US Microsoft even pay for the box) which cost me about $5au... I took my hard-drive off boxed it up and sent it away.
2 weeks later I have my console back, a complimentary month of live and a working console.
My friend bought a PS3 at launch, so that cost him $999au. His PS3 died after about 18 months. That is out of the 1 year warranty. He phones up Sony and is told that it will cost $300 to repair, payable in advance. So he pays the $300, also pays for the postage himself and waits 1 month. His console is returned, he plugs it in and it still didn't work. I realise the chances of this happening much be incredibly small but it happened. So he sent it back, and was told that they couldn't fix the problem so they would send him a new console. Unfortunately they don't sell the launch models anymore, so he wouldn't be able to have backwards compatibility with his PS2 games now.
So he now has a brand new working console. No save games as all were on the original's internal hard-drive, although it has been pointed out to me that even if he did get his console back the saves would have been lost too. So not only did it cost him $300 to get repaired but all the time he invested into this games was gone too.
This might not be what you meant by cheaper in the long run. In my example though, it's clearly the 360 which worked out cheaper.
As I stated right at the start of this thread. You should pick the console which has the exclusive games you want to play. I chose the 360 and haven't been disappointed. I would love to own a PS3 but even with the price drop it's still too expensive for me to contemplate.
