I'm gonna start doing these mini-blog posts about developing Wooded Grotto and Sylvan Bliss, mainly because I feel like it and I have alot to share about the subject.
I'm not too shaken by the thought redoing anything in this. The first Wooded Grotto took me about 3 months, and was slightly rushed at the end. The truth is, the voice acting was decided on, and added in almost at the last minute! I'm glad I did, because I have a feeling that it's what won me 1st place.
As for redoing things, there were at least 10 rooms I redid, or cut completely in the first Wooded Grotto. Some were because of performance issues, while others were because something didn't work in the room and it needed to be changed. However, some rooms were cut all together because of uselessness (remember, I wasn't thinking about voice acting when I made the level.) In retrospect, those rooms would've added alot to the re-playability and exploration factors.
The first time you play through, for example, you go through one room and hear one voice clip. The second time, you decide to explore a little more, and go through the second room. You hear a different voice clip that changes, if only slightly, how you look at the story and the conclusion to the story.
There wasn't much of that in Wooded Grotto, unfortunately, but I'm hoping to include some in Sylvan Bliss.
I'm still working on getting a good entity for the green & grunge to make the stumps/trees not look bad coming from the walls/ceiling. I don't have much to say about this area though.
