how many polygons would a good character have? I have 428 faces without feet. is that good?
AND NO! I AM NOT MAKING A FREE CHARACTER FOR THE COMMUNITY! *hint*hint*

I'm hoping that I don't need to do to much more work to it, it's kinda hard for me to reduce polys on this thing for me.

4000 pollies is a good amount, any more will result in slow down, What i do is i make my leval bosses a little higher like around a good 6000 to 7000 pollies for real good detail. but just regular leval enimys I modle them around 2000 to 3000.

here he is. his arms are wrapped up, and the plan is to add detail to the face, and make a few stray bandages. how does it look?

The great thing about FPSC is you can always make tradeoffs.

You can have a high poly character in the game but need to ensure he is the only character present in a particular scene, like a boss fight.

You should be using normal and specular maps with custom shaders to add detail for low poly characters. Also there are good tools out there which can reduce the number of polygons in a model. I would recommend the free XSI mod tool which does a great job of this.

I've imported Doom 3 characters into FPSC with normal and specular maps with great results and good performace. The only problem was getting their proper animations in there as I ended up rigging them to the standard FPSC bi-ped which doesn't really do them justice.
