In the rules of the alien competition it says that the alien logo which must be included on the title screen is not to be altered in any way. However, the white on black logo does not actually have background of hexidecimal colour value 0. I was wondering whether it would be permitted to very slightly alter the logo by changing the background of the logo so that it is now color value 0?

On another note, it would be useful to have a competition forum where aspects of competitions such as this alien one could be discussed.

er, i wouldnt of thought that would be a problem, as long as you dont turn transparency on. Better wait to see what rich says though...

You can edit the background to make the logo (background) transparent if you wish. You can also change the size of the logo, but it must be readable and prominent.

We don't mind if you do one of those "fade on/off" things like you see at the start of most PC games where it fades on the first company logo, then fades it off, fades on the developer logo, etc then the title page. That is fine. You just MUST show the Alienware logo and show it clearly and unobstructed.

As for questions re: the compo, keep posting them here.

Cheers,

Rich

transpareny is <11 rgb which this falls into...
that said its simply a tag, so just put it on there as like a tag in the corner out of the way.

mine isn't actually on the title screen as such, technically right now i don't have one - and don't plan o having one either.
i just have it in the title sequence, its the first picture ... kinda flys at the user and masks the next screen which is nVidia's Logo, that then lays on the floor ripples into metallic water which starts RavenStudio's thingie which i added an extra lil bit which has a light in the angel's hands which when you come in close you see is a spinning dbpro pyramid which is emmitting a few particles the background then goes blank as the pyramid stops spinning as the particles settle into "The Game Creators" ... and just fades away and the starting animation start begining with Ed on the rating screen - which he kinda edits from an 8+ Kids to an 18+ Adult, which goes into the whole "story sequence title"
which finish with a quick loading screen which just has a loading icon onto the main menu.

i have a feeling most of what i've done so far wouldn't pass the comps guidelines hehee - so probably just as well i'm still thinking about entering, as there is no official entering thingie til later this month then its all cool.

been hearing alot about everyone else games, have a feeling there are gonna be some good games ... i know there are gonna be 1 or 2 which are just serious tounge-in-cheek alot more humour in this competition which i think is a good change. I figured most would have the exact same ideas, but doesn't actually seem to be the case quite a few unique ideas out there.
only time will tell though eh

A tag? I never thought of using it that way. It'd work better and be more prominent and less intrusive to just show it at the beginning for 5 seconds, then fade into the game.

OKay, QUESTIONS

1) Can Rich(someone who knows whats happening) give me a darkbasic pic(DB deserves credit too)
2)Does Mr alien have a name?(please say no, since I thought of a really nice name-"BAFU"-took me a whole day)
3)In my game there's going to be a squad of Aliens and "Humans", and a bunch of small cutesy creaturesin the end(ever played the game "Incubation", I'm going to make a game similar to that)Turn based multiplayer 3d worms style.I've thought of the story plan, and everything is fitting in the right way so far...question is can there be more than one alien?
4)how do you "submit your game"(I've just been wondering about that for a while)
5)something really funny and strange, I went to modify Mr Aliens animations(he's too slow), I killed the anims and started making a walk cylce, well, I did it, but the legs "twitch" a fair noticeable amount(lol, I couldn't stop laughing), so I dicided to kill it and use the premade ones,(I just made the walk cycle 30 frames (running-my alien guy can't walk)instead of 150(I think)), modifying the aliens animation is alowd isn't it?(like killing all the built in anims and fully customizing the anims)

read more about incubation here...

i remember incubation ran like a slug on my system of the time, but really reminded me of WH40K - pitty by the time i had hardware to actually run it the CD that it came on was so scratched it wasn't anything more than bin fodder.

'Incubation'

D'oh, I thought nobody else had played that. I began to get annoyed with it after a bit... it had more to do with Tetris and Myst than it did with X-Com . Tile-based lever puzzles and floating tile swapping etc... gets on my nerves after a while.

what the hell, the incubation, I'm talking about, doesn't look like tetris...(or at least not that I know of), incubation makes a good party game, get a bunch of friends over and shoot each other.(yay)

anyway, thanks rich, be looking forword for newsletter 9

Yes, it's the same game, but I got annoyed of playing less with my troopers' guns and more with levers

to be honest I've barely played the missions, just mostly in instant action(multiplayer) with my friends. it's a pretty old game, but it's a classic for me.

(for XP users, you got to set the settings to 256 colors for it to run normal speed)

Back to the original topic, another question for you, Rich!

I was sort of thinking of doing a funky transition with the Alienware logo, is that acceptable as long as it ends up being the full logo on-screen? It's just that the initial stages of the transition would be modified versions of the logo. (For example, if I wanted the logo to start shattered and then come together, is that considered modification of the logo?)

Edit: Doh! Sorry, I just re-read your comment above, Rich. Basically as far as I can tell, as long as the logo ends up on-screen, prominent and readable in one of the two provided formats I should be fine, right?

This is perfectly acceptable.
