CAPER CITY

Game by:Xplosys

As you can see, the game makes heavy use of Model Pack 36. There is currently some other content from the forum and a little custom content by me, more to be made and added. The level takes up the entire map and is playable on three layers.

Story: Very basically, the story is this. In hard times, you have no choice but to take employment with a small time MOB boss in Caper City. You'll have to do whatever he wants you to, though you know it won't be easy or legal. In Caper City, you will have many errands to run, from simple collections to hits. More as this develops.

Demo/Walk Through: Download here[RAR] or here[ZIP]. This is built with V1.15 - V1.16 would not build it. If your system is not a beast, there will be lag. Perhaps I can get a MOD to work with it. Fenix and Project Green would not build it either. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Shame because the speed was great with Project Green. If someone with multiple MOD experience would shoot me an email, I would love to talk with you about my options.

Pics: Theses are brightened up a bit for better forum viewing.

It's often difficult finding new and inventive ways to contain the player in the game zone. Here, train tracks run the length of one side of the map.

In the far corner of the map, major damage keeps the player contained.

From the top of the bridge.

113th street. An open door here and more on the map that give inside access to eight different buildings, plus alleys, trains and more.

What small city would be complete without a playground, and what better equipment then Kravenwolfs.

Some things I need:
-I'm looking for a good city skybox if anyone knows where I can score one. Preferably night, but if I can darken it up I will.

More to come. Please give me your thoughts.

Brian.

great looking, but if having trouble playing/loading with 8 gigs of ram, then a very small number of pp will be able to play. also, I seem to have that same fence problem. you can see through it, and there are no chainlinks, only weird dots.

to fenix mod!

No, I have no trouble playing the level. I have trouble building the level which is much more memory intensive than playing it. I currently have three GIG and I'll try adding more to see if it completes the build. When I went from 2 GIG to 3GIG, it went further but still didn't complete.

As for the fence, it looks fine until you get right up to it like in the screen shot. It's just a plain so that can't be helped.

My board will take 8GB so next week I'll bump it up again and try that. I may have to go back to the level and start taking it apart from the end backwards. We'll see. I wanted to have a walk through for you to test, but it will have to wait."

-Are you currently using a mod? Or 1.16 for that matter? I hear many people including myself have troubles building with 1.16 as well as Fenix mod.
-Any troubles running the test? Or just the final build version?
-I doubt Your RAM is the issue. I'm pretty sure what you've cram-packed in there is more than enough.
-More info would be helpful

As for your skybox issues. I do know of one night city-scape skybox. However, I'm not sure if it will fit in as it's very... skyscraper-ish, very much intact and fully lit. Looking at these shots, doesn't seem like it'd fit.

Download Bibo's pack there, there is a city skybox inside, you'll need "Skies" off of your very own website to put it together

Alternatively, there's another pack with a cityscape that may fit your needs, if it weren't for the purple sky, but if you think you can fix that check it out.

Looks very good BTW (especially the railroads there) and hope to see more from you soon Xplosys

Hey man this is looking superb so far, it's got a perfect city atmosphere with great attention to detail and layout. I also love the look of that sunken railway system

If you're still looking for some cool city skyboxes, definitely might like to check out Bibo4PC's Skybox Packs, they're quite superb. Pack 3 in particular has a very well done night time city one, not entirely sure if it's what you're looking, just thought I'd point it out. Packs 4 and 6 have a city skybox as well.

Lookin' forward to seeing more though for sure, a demo would be wicked!

Cheers

Edit

Ah you beat me to it there Ekipshi

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.

Great info guys, thanks for the sky box info. I have Bibo4PC's packs and I'll look through that.

Ekipshi,
I am using V1.16/no MOD. I was wondering if a MOD would help. Do you think I would have better luck going back to V1.15?

I have no problem running the test game as you can see, only trying to build. Like I said, I can build with low settings, but once I try to build with light mapping, it fails near the end.

System Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 4200 Dual Core
3GB DDR
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT w/512MB
Windows 7 Pro.

I have the same problem in XP now that the level is so big. It was building in XP before it got this big, but not now.

More pics:

City cab and the Caper City Herald.

A lovely view from Old Broadway.

You don't say.
I've run into problems recently with detailed levels and light mapping as well. Perhaps there's just too much awesomeness that you've pooled into one map.

A few questions if I may:
-You use Quick Lightmapping?
-I see your lighting is obviously rather low, but what are the lightmap size/quality settings?
-Will it build without light mapping period?

I do seem to have better luck with 1.15,I've run across some new problems since "upgrading" to 1.16

New shots look really great. You do those billboards/ads/taxi signs etc yourself? They look marvelous and fit in perfectly.

Ekipshi,

Yes, I use Quick Lightmapping.
Lightmap size/quality settings are default - 512 and 5 I think it is.
Yes, it builds without lightmapping but of course looks like crap

Am trying V1.15 in a few minutes. We'll see. I just have to back everything up first.

The signs are mine, but not the street signs.

It might be easier on your hardware if you built it using a lower shadow map/lightmap texture size. You can still keep the quality at its current or even increase it some.

As for the game, it looks really well decorated. Often when people make city environments in FPSC, it looks cramped and the placement is unlogical. This however, looks great, it looks like an actual city. Great work.

Finally, I got V1.15 to build the level after a complete uninstall/reinstall. Still, I cannot raise the light mapping or texture quality above default. I didn't know if it's something I did in the level or just the power of the engine. V1.16 still will not build it, even after the clean install.

The Walk Through is now here and on to the first post, but if your system is not a beast, there will be lag. Perhaps I can get a MOD to work with it. Fenix and Project Green would not build it either. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Shame because the speed was great with Project Green. If someone with multiple MOD experience would shoot me an email, I would love to talk with you about my options.

Yes there are some free ones, but I couldn't tell you where to find them anymore. I've been collecting models for 4 years but unless someone gives me permission to put their files on fpsFREE, I don't host them.

Please try the walk through and let me know of any issues. I know there will be some lag, but hopefully I can fix that with a MOD. What I'm looking for is holes, places where you can get outside the game zone, anywhere you may get stuck, mistakes, bad design, recommendations, etc.

other than the fact that the .rar doesn't work, and there is no game data for it to read, I have found no bugs so far lol
could you re-upload it? It's hard to play a game from a broken .rar

Just downloaded and checked the rar. No problems on this end. Perhaps your download failed?

when you say the lightmapping fails near the end does it just freeze or are you getting an error message? I find this typically happens when my lights are to big (over 200) and I have my lightmap settings at 35 or more. I also find that it happens with certain entities, it more or less becomes a crap shoot to figure out which one is causing the build issue. Feel free to email me if you would like to discuss more

After more experimenting and research, it appears that this is an FPS Creator memory problem. Not the amount of memory in the computer, but the way FPSC handles memory internally. That's the best way I know to put it.

Testing the level in V1.16 is pretty much lag free, but it won't build. V1.15 builds the level, but it lags a lot. Go figure

For now I'll put this on the back burner and hope for a better, faster FPSC update in the near future. The level walk through is on the first post if you'd like to explore it. Trying to put any kind of AI or dynamic objects into it now would be a study in futility.

See you in the funny papers.

Just curious, this may have no effect.. maybe as a last resort try to surround your entire level with invisible segments to "build it in". There have been discussions about doing this with very little determined but heck why not? You have a great start I would hate to see you throw in the towel!

mAcpo,

Sent you an email. I actually did try that, though not with invisible segments. Just to see if it would help, I surrounded the level below and up three levels with a wall. No help. I believe that it's trying to draw buildings 3 and 4 levels high that's killing it.

Some very nice work went into this Brian. Excellent job. We only hit a couple of places where the fps dropped to 12- one at the end of Main Street where the collapsed building is, and the other right on the corner of 113th and Main.

Other than that, we hope that you get everything worked out. The lighting was perfect, and the scene layout is really thought out. Would like to see this project from beginning to end without you having to shelve it.

If there's anything Cathy and I can do to help, you have but to ask.

Cheers

Mike
