***SORRY*** Title Should Say Weapons and Characters. ***

Hey Guys!! i am going to start weapon and character modelling soon i would love to release some stuff for free (or a low price) once I have done them, but, what do i need to know, i have a few questions to start off:-
USING Milkshape 3d, but willing to buy other software.
--What is a shader, why/how does it run
--What are the absaloute needs (eg rigging, animation)
--What is rigging?
--Animation tutorials??
--Rigging tutorials??
--Reccomended programs.
--Facts to help.
--Any Other things i need to know?

Anuways, i have only just got round to making this post, i have searched google, and found bits and bobs, but then i thought, why not just ask tgc?? :S I have gathered the above questions after reading a few posts about characters. I am ok with weapons, i can model them (not rig coz i dont know what rigging is) and not animate. I Really want to know how to do it.

WEAPONS
What are the steps i need to take, please fill in the blanks.

Make texture
2. Model
3. Add texture + Model
4. ------
5.-------
6. ------

And any other steps.

Any other information that you have would help me sooo much! When i learn how to do this i will hopefully release some very very low priced model packs including entitys, segments, weapons and characters. (any suggestions for themes???)
Thanks Guys!!!

Ciao!

I'd actually model before I made the texture. you have to model before you can UVmap. and when you've done that, then you can texture your model. then write a .fpe then test in FPSC

Steps:

1.Model
2.Unwrap model
3.Texture
4.Rig the FPSC skeleton to model
5.Export
6.Set it up in FPSC

To answer your questions:

A shaders is a fancy thing that applies special effects to your models like bumpmap that gives your model depth, reflections ect.

Absolute needs for weapons and characters are modelling, uvmapping, texturing and rigging.

Rigging is applying skeleton/bones+animations to your model.

Animation and rigging tutorials are available all over the internet.

The best tools for a beginer are Gimp/Paint Shop Pro and Milkshape/Fragmotion.

Fact is that without a good model and texture the animation doesnt matter because the model looks ugly, another fact is that without proper modelling skills your riggings of characters will suck because of unneeded/badly placed polys.

Other things to know: First learn to model and unwrap+texture, keep practicing, once you atleast know how to make a normal model that is up to low standards, then go rigging and animating.

here is a little something I put together a while ago, is for 3d animated character, not for weapon.
