Shouldn't it be 'What is the best way of learning to model'?

It really depends on what modeling program you have, how quick you learn, your grasp on 3d shape, and your artist abillities. You'll never get the same methiod from 2 differant people. The only consitant answer will be 'practice'.

Whatever way it is asked,it's the same

Anyways, get used to the tools and what they do...Ask about what to use for what you want etc...This is a good place to start...You can visit 3d modeling forums such as Polycount.com's message boards and aska few tips there...Or just log on to the Darkbasic channel on Coolchat,I can help better/faster from there.

Some Modeling programs are better at organics objects and others at inorganic. Also some programs texture better than others, or have bones, and of course there is cost of the program. You may also want a programs that supports nurbs, or not.
Give us a list of a few thing you would like to model and a price of the package that would not be excessive. I am sure someone can help. Also if you have not modeled before I would not suggest you include people in your list of things to model.
Best of luck!

Basically any software that can create and extrude a box can make organic model...So about every one of them can.

To answer you question:

#1 formal class
#2 To be showed hands on by a competent friend.
#3Get a set of tutorial tapes to watch.
#4 Get a good book and really work your way though it.

..also find tutorials on the net. Make sure you work a little 3-5 days a week at first. It is not hard but requires repetition, and lots of hands on will make the difference!

What? That it should read instead:'What is the best way of learning to model'

I know there's no such thing as a 'best' way,it's your way.

Select a program, and then use it. You of course need to have an artist's eye. This is art we're talking about, after all. How to define that? You can't.

But all I can say is just, select a program and use it. Ignore the posts that goes -- "Oh this modeller is so wonderful you've GOT to have it." Stick with your program, use it, learn its quirks and features.

You'll probably be sticking to the program for a long, long time so choose well. Then use it, use it, use it. And make lots of models. Make one every day. Two. Three. Texture it, try to animate it. You'll be confused, but little by little you'll grasp your program.

And then, if you've got the artist's eye, that will transcend the technique, and you'll make wonderful models.

My God! That man knows what an 'artist eye' is!

**bows respectfully**

And on another note. "The only consitant answer will be 'practice'"
Thats the statement of Arrows that 'I'm with".

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy, except in modeling which all work and no play makes Jack money, but yet the modeling can be considered as play so thus all play and no work makes jack a rich boy... ect ect ect

Working on 4 projects 2 RPG(programming texturing and 3d map), 1 3rd person shooter (Programming), and a special project.

Thanx all.

Well I have Milkshape and Wings3D, but I can't seem to make human type models out of them. Milkshape if find is a bit more complex.
If you could shed some light on modeling humans/creatures, I'd be greatful.

Yeah I gotta agree with you Brent, tutorials are pretty useless if you never practice.

The second time, you always do it better and faster.
