Hi there,

I've heard modellers talk about Hollow functions. As I'm writing a 3d modeller (level editor) myself (the DeleD program i've mentioned on this forum before ) I would like to know more about it. What does it do, how does it work? Can anyone enlighten me?

Bye,
Jeroen

in Valve Hammer the Hollow or Make Hollow routine takes a selected piece of geometry, and hollows it out from the inside (geometric center). So lets say I have a cube, select it, choose make hollow, input dialog asks for wall thickness in units, set the wall thickness, apply. The function carves out the geometry to leave a hollow space within.

As far as how to program one I have absolutely no idea

As far as I can think, you'd just flip the object normals, then extrude all the faces outwards.

Brains are for idiots.

Yeah I understand perfectly what you both are saying. I think I definately should build this into DeleD.

Are there any functions simular to Hollow that should be in a 3d editor?

Well, I implemented the Hollow function in DeleD. I do this by extruding all polygons of the object by a certain amount (e.g 50 units) and then use the Reverse Vertice Order of each original polygon. Works like a charm!

I think you mean something similar to 3DStudio Max Boolean functions.
In 3dsmax you can use one object to carve away from another. Let's say you had a cube, then you make a long cylinder, you position the cylinder so it is skewering thru the cube, you carve out the cube using the cylinder, and you're left with a cube with a hole completely thru it. There are other variations of the Boolean operations but I can't rightly explain it. Maybe someone else here can explain further, but that's the one "carve" operation I know of.

Also, these boolean operations come in Upgrade 6 I believe. There is a good post about it somewhere but I can't find it.
