Free one I use is Valve Hammer Editor 3.4 (Half Life Mods)
if you get it, I suggest you also download Zoner Halflife Tools to replace the 4 compilers in Valve (or you'll have big trouble in dbp with bsp's) and also get Wally for textures.

After that the 3dimensional chat forum will be your best friend.

Quark is also another good bsp progerm, but as 'rustler said hammer is pretty good, quark havever can make and compile maps for all sorts of games including halflife, the quake games,jk2,heritic 2, hexen and a list of others. whts good about having both of them is that they both load .map files so u can create in hammer and compile in quarke. u will also need python if u use guark.

w00t -what does it mean?

Basically dbp (3d) supports BSP, X, 3ds, and MD+(L,2,3)
If you have a 3d editor that can output these formats you should be ok. And this is assuming you have Update 5, latest DirectX 9.0b, and your vid card's latest drivers. I use BSP,X and 3ds, but have never tried MD...

Good Luck

Any 3d object can be used to make a "level" as long it is a format that dbp can use. I like BSP because all of the collision is handled for you with a couple of simple commands.
