When did you start programming?
January 2002

What type of school and college did you go to?

You go to school at day, attend Uni at night and yet somehow you can still fit in a job that pays $21k a year at the age of 17?

1st question
When did you start proggramming??
1983. I was 10. On a speccy 48k.

2nd question
What type a school and colledge did you go to?
Normal comprehensive school. Went to a BTEC college to do computing cos A-Levels didn't do computing 100% of the time. Then University to do Computer science degree.

3rd question
What programming langs. do you know??
Thoroughbred Basic (Unix business basic language)
Visual Basic
Hmmm... Make that a lot of basics that I have used a lot over the years including QBasic, GW-Basic, and various business basic languages used over the years (eg. IBM's Universe - STEP/Unidata variant)
Cobol
Ada (which essentially means Pascal, Delphi, and Modula 2 are a stone throw away)
Java
Note: I did not include non-professional languages (eg. DB) or anything I don't think I could get a good job at (tonnes of langs in Uni and messed with eg. C++, just not to my satisfaction of job worthy standard). Also no internal languages mentioned. eg. VBA (Excel etc) or Oracle/SQL/DBase stuff.

4th question
How much money do you make ??
Hohoho. Don't think I'll answer that one. Lets just say I do pretty well. Heh, pretty well for a non-contractor that it.

5th question
Do you work with a team or alone?
Ummm... yes and no. I'm a teamleader and sort the team out basically. Although we rarely do multi-programmer modifications. Generally chuck a job at a person and let them get on with it.

6th question
Tell a little somthing about yourself
Hmmm. I work as a programmer in the travel industry (LP, Thomson etc). Always wanted to work as a programmer as my ideal job. Annoyingly includes a lot of other rubbish. But still good. Um... love fast cars, and erm... the usual.. Also (for the first time ever) considering alternative career. Probably not the kind of thing you want to hear, but basically the IT industry (in UK at least, and by the look of it, also the US) is in a shambles at the min (seems to be continuing from 911), and programming (and all that comes with it) can be really really stressful (not the programming itself; is really easy after a few years, just all the rest of it - big eg. deadlines and Project damagers - heh managers). Never thought I'd say it, but unless I program for myself (ie. own business) then I may get out. If I could become a writer (total dream job) I would move to Florida (houses are cheap as s**t out there) and live the good life. Sigh....

Cheers

pretty well for a non-contractor that is.
Ahh - the golden pot at the end of the rainbow - contracting. Dammit. Contracting was practically a lisence to print money when I left for uni (1999), and then just as I graduate, the arse of the IT market falls out. I remember when simple helpdesk support could earn you as much as a mid-career programmer's post would now!

Hmmm. Basically contracting is a very individual thing. Not everyone likes it, and everyone will hate you with a passion if you are one of the only contractors in a company. Some examples:-

1. Friend of mine earned about £1500 ($2000+?) a week (after tax) as a contractor. That was his second contracting job. He blagged this job BTW
2. One guy in our place earned around £150k ($220k+?) a year for about 5 years as a contractor. Mainly because the company couldn't be bothered to find a full time person for his job. Git...
3. A contractor in our place was 22 years old, had never done contracting in his life, and had only ever worked on computer games as a translator (he translated Carmmaggedon into Japanese apparently). He used to earn £20k a year, but we paid him that for 6 months work. Turned out he was s**t and left after 3 months. Still...

Interestingly all the contractors I know are having a harder time now, esp since Y2K and 911. Estimates are around a quarter of jobs there were 2 years ago. If that. A lot of them are turning to full time employment.

Cheers

Ya contractors have the plauge in most companies. When I did contract out I made sure i was in a small company with a limited or no IT service.

I was in one company with a 4 man IT service, and they tried everything to get me out. After a couple weeks of crap and more crap. I was called before the CEO and major players in the company. I talked to them for about 7 hours. Their IT people were fired. I stayed on handling things until they could hire new people.

1st question - When did you start proggramming?

1981 using the Tandy Color Computer (Basic and Assembly Language)

2nd question - What type a school and colledge did you go to?

No college, but I attended a number of USAF technical schools during my military career. While I did go to tech school for computer programming, I am self taught and I simply pick up a book and learn a new language when I need to.

3rd question - What programming langs. do you know?

Several flavors of Basic, ASM, ADA, C/C++, Pascal, Java, Javascript, HTML, Perl, Visual Basic, SQL, what ever I need to get the job done.

4th question - How much money do you make?

50K+ USD

5th question - Do you work with a team or alone?

I work with a whole department of business analysts, but I am the only VB applications and tools developer they have.

6th question - Tell a little somthing about yourself

Lets see... Spent 12 years in the Air Force moving from various jobs as my wanderlust struck me: A-10 Weapons Specialist, Microwave Communication and Security Systems Specialist, and finally Computer Programmer. Got married and started a family so I decided to leave the Air Force and become a civilian programmer for a number of companies in the Oklahoma City area. Currently, I'm an application programmer for a large insurance company. While I could choose a career as a game designer and programmer, I like the stability of the corporate culture. So, I keep my gaming development at the hobby level.

How did I get into computer programming? Two separate events
come to mind: Back in the eighties, I was one of those arcade junkies. I'd could easily drop several hundred dollars a paycheck in quarters. As a challenge to myself, I stopped cold turkey for a few weeks and used the money that I saved to buy my first computer.
Still, I never got beyond the hobby stage with CoCos and C-64s. The second event that changed my career was when I was stationed at the USAF alternate headquarters at Tinker AFB. I worked the night shift and was surrounded by dozens of PCs. I put some of my slack time into teaching myself C programming and decided to make that my new USAF job. I've been a professional programmer ever since.

Just on the side, i learnt to program on a Archemedies Acorn, pressing F11 (i think) gave you CMD access, then type BASIC and you away.

Thats how i broke it too, i cannot remember how but i was playing with screen settings and did somming, never worked after that.

[I alsokicked it a few times.]

But i was lucky, i had a CD Rom and Tape Drive

I think it was F12 for the command prompt (cant remember now either). I tended to use basic through !edit, and not bother with the command prompt. Until I got my RiscPC, my A3010 just had a floppy drive.

It does tend to help if you dont kick it...
