im trying to start a 2d checkers game and im just not sure where to start

Choose a programming language!

Draw a board in a paint program then load it in and paste it as an image.

Create the pieces from sprites.

Yeah, there's no more direct place to start than with your board. Get a board, 8x8 grid, and some playing piece in place, then it's easy to add player control, and the arduous task of adding AI is much more fun when you can see it working.

Board, Pieces, Moving, then look at AI - maybe get it working as a 2-player game, then you can add in very basic random AI, and then worry about proper AI later, by which time you'll have more knowledge.

Can you work out how to draw the board in DB? It's not too hard.
