A friend pointed me to this site
http://www.opacity.us 2 weeks ago, which is all about derelict large buildings like factories, hospitals, churches, asylums etc. Tom Kirschner, who runs the site is not only a very skilled photographer but also a great researcher.
I found a lot of these pictures not only fascinating on their own but also very inspiring regarding FPSC games.
Here are some examples from the 178(!)galleries:
Psychatric Hospital:

County Jail:

Army Research Center:

Crypt:

Hotel:

State School:

Stamping Plant:

I thought that a lot of these photographes would also make great loading screens - especially those showing buildings from the outside since we cant do that with the engine so easily:
p.e. Chateau:
http://www.opacity.us/image5168_steeple.htm
So I asked Mr. Kirschner about using his art:
Quote: "
1.
Is there any kind of license that would allow to use your photographes to derivate textures from them (I p.e. found a lot of grunge wall textures suitable for a Stalker/Fallout-like game and several highly usable broken windows & doors amongst your pictures) to be used in NON-commercial work only.
2.
Is there any kind of license that would allow us to use your photographs for loading screens, part of huds, journal entries within the game etc. in NON-commercial work only. Especially your outside shots of the whole building would make terriffic menu or loading screens for games set up in an asylum, prison, hospital or old factory (which most of our games actually are) "
And this is what he answered (aggreeing to have it posted here on the forums):
Quote: "Anyone may use my photographs in non-profit projects, so long as credit is given somewhere in the form of "Photograph © www.opacity.us" listed somewhere. If parts of them are used in games (interfaces etc), the copyright and link would be appropriate in some visible place existing within the project (credits, website, read-me text file, etc).
Let me know if you have any questions!"
Imo this answer is quite clear on using his photographes within non-commerical games as anything BUT textures. So I guess anyone wanting to actually cut out something and skin it over a model would have to write Mr. Kirschner again:
