I have a few questions about animation compatability between Max 4 and DBP. Up until now I have used either .3ds export and converted with 3D Exploration / Deep Exploration or I have used the Panda export.

The .3ds export in Max4 does not support bones, and I cannot get my Panda exporter to export any kind of animation.

I would like to move onto bone based animation, but cannot export my creations from Max.

Other types of animation I have experimented with include directly moving vertices on an editable mesh - that also doesn't export, and using the wave gizmo to ripple an object, that also doesn't export.

Should I be looking for an .mdl exporter? Or is it just a case of particular settings for the Panda exporter? Or is Max 4 just too old and is it time to upgrade, I cant afford to upgrade Max, so it'd be a case of learning something new like Milkshape so i'm hoping to avoid doing that.

You can use a hieracy of boxes instead of bones, that seems to work in max R3. As for mesh deformation, not a chance with the 3ds format.

I found a .x exporter plugin for max that will export skinned deformation (again only from primatives not bones) it's part of the Direct X SDK and needs compiling. You can find a pre-compiled copy at www.maxplugins.de

The only problem with the max r3 version is that it exports frames as 'ticks' so your animations are very sloooooooow, ie 30 frames in max gives a 96000 frame x file. perhaps the R4 version is better.

Thankyou for that site link i've downloaded a ton of exporters and tried them all. The one - the single one - that worked was an exporter for Quake 3. Now I just have to see if I can get DBP to read it, i'm using patch 4.1 at the moment so it's time to upgrade...

Don't give up PneumaticDryll

Try this link for an .x exporter, a lot of people swear by it:

Can I just ask on this subject - are boned animations exported as keyframes or are they just exported as, say, 'rotate this bone x units on the y axis' so they could have movement 'added' onto them?
