Hi there,

What use do edgeloops and edgerings have and what exactly is the difference between the two?

Bye,
Jeroen

I was wondering that myself, and I'll not know for sure until someone in-the-know answers this.

But anyway - here's my estimation:
If you imagine a leg, and draw a ring around the circumfrence, that'd be like an edgering, and if you drew a line down the middle, between the toes, then up past the ankle, that'd be like an edge loop. The idea is that using these as guides gives your mesh a more natural look, because it's easier to see the natural flow of the mesh. I have no idea how you'd impliment something like this - In VANmesh I plan to highlight a line from a specified point, to each nearest vertice - might give similar results.

well, they can be important when you want to smooth your model later by subdividing faces. This make them important for high poly modeling ...you make your model simplified(relatively low poly) and then subdividing to get detail and smoothenes ...via well placed edgeloops you can control this proces to get what you need at the end.

For low poly game modeling you dont have to care too much about them. They can be useful only in places where bones meet...

...actarus can give you couple of good links to forums where this topic is discused wery well...just ask him

You'd need a software that supports quads to get them selection methods and in order to understand better you should download Wings3D it's free and one of the firsts to use these Nendo/Mirai-like features.

That said, the easy explanation would be:

Take a cylinder, select one of the horizontal edges and apply an Edgeloop selection and see what happens...The whole contour is now selected.

On the Same Cylinder, select a vertical edge and use Edgering Select...All parralel edges sharing the same surrounding edgeloops will now be selected.

Try it.
