It's no secret that the stock models for FPSC aren't the most advanced, but if I use my own models and textures, will it look more like a next-gen game? Should I just use UDK instead? Thanks in advance.

if your new to game creation and want a game done fast and simple stay with fpsc if you know how to script model textures ext then go to udk

But beware udk's liscence is very expensive if you want to sell a game

@ Thaddeus McGillicuddy

If you get a chance take a look at what Bond1 and EAI produce regarding FPSC and you may not be so quick to dismiss what FPSC can do given a little hard work (same hard work any engine requires).

Also have a browse of the showcase section etc to see what many members here have done with FPSc and you may be surprised

Your signature has been erased by a mod. The sig needs to be 600 width maximum (x 120 height) for all of it.

You asked in the wrong place, kinda like asking about God vs Science on the Vatican forum...

You want Geek Culture for stuff like this, the opinions here are gonna be biased to FPSC...

@coffeegrunt
I knew that when I was posting, but I didn't expect anyone to lie to me.

Also, I never doubted FPSC's capabilities. I was just asking if the games get better than the stock features. The only FPSC game I've played was Beyond Life, but I know that one game is nothing to base an entire opinion off of.

Not really (not any more at least), they now have a $99 royalty bearing (25%) license with free Steam distribution (they cut a deal with Valve). If you know what your doing with it then you'll more than make up that in a week (of course 25% of the game's revenue still goes to Epic, but only after the first $5000)

It's the learning curve that shoots so many people in the foot

Thanks everyone. Guess I'll make a few games with FPSC and then try my hand at UDK.

A few games should hopefully mean a few full games included with the tons of practice.

I've been here hardly three months, I pretty much double my FPSC knowlege/skill every month, and I'm still nowhere close to making a full game, mainly due to the urge to get better before starting, and the new ways of level design always change my ideas.

Try FPSC for a while and move on to UDK.
The learning curve will come smoother.

Yeah, the learning curve is big, but if you take a year on fpsc then switch, while taking tutorials, UDK would be great. 2 days in and I built a decent level. Remember the tutorials, Raven on youtube is probably your best bet as a beginner.

FPSC if you are not a programmer or new to programming
UDK if you are a programmer with object oriented experience

Yeah, I have a permanent limp now thanks to UDK!

Or just stick with FPSC if you like it and the community. (we are all here)

I havent read what anyone else has said, but UDK is free unless you release a commercial game.UDK is the better option gameplay and graphics wise, but itll take more work to make a game with it

Your models can look pretty awesome in FPSC if you use one of Bond1's shaders. (check out DarkSHADER if you want to really get funky with it)
I think if you search for Bond1's shader threads and look at the images of what he can do in FPSC then you will be pretty amazed. (check out his tutorials too)
Check out the Metro Theatre pack he created for some shader eye candy for FPSC that will make your models really stand out.

Quote: "Should I just use UDK instead?"

I found it much more difficult to get custom animated models into UDK vs getting them into FPSC. (but I use a $35 modeling program, not the $3500 one they expect you to use)

Don't forget about the new LIPSYNC feature in FPSC, because if you like to model characters then you might enjoy playing around with that.
And for those who didn't know already; model packs 44 & 45 characters ARE rigged for lipsync. (I didn't know it until after I bought them)

I don't.
The title suggests it, but the real question was pertaining to the models and textures.
I think that either engine is capable to look "more like a next-gen game" than the stock models.
It just boils down to your skill level and which engine you find easier to use.

Go with FPSC

You can re create most amateur scenes I've scene in UDK with FPSC now thanks to bond1's shaders and everything else like physics and AI are much easier to implement with FPSC.

Also rigging and getting custom characters into your game is well supported in FPSC and bond1 is about to release a dynamic shadow shader which will give FPSC graphics another order of magnitude improvement.

Well I have tried both and FPS Creator is by far the easiest to use lol. Unreal is a great engine and will no doubt be capable of way faster and more detailed games than Fps Creator. It is a proffesional tool and as such is complicated to use. The editor was pretty daunting in itself. I am guessing Unreal is a better tool for large teams than individuals(although the mods some people have done turned out pretty well).
If you are capable of using Unreal and know what is required then that's the one to use. If like me you find it a little daunting, stick with Fps Creator.

If your models don't look good in FPSC, then they won't look good in UDK either.

It seems like your question is more about the stock media then the engine - are YOUR models and textures more advanced than the stock models?

Ive re textured the stock models in the past and they looked fantastic, nothing wrong with them at all, a good texture on low poly model will look better than a high poly model with poor maps, and it all depends on the style of game you are going for, it may suit a specific game to go with just a diffuse map, all depending on what style of game you are making.

This company 3drt does low poly models and they all look fantastic
http://www.3drt.com/3dm/3d_characters.htm

To prove a point here is the Lowpoly lower LOD version of one of their models - 846 + 188 (sword )triangles

I think some of the users here are obsessed with shader applied models, yes they are nice, and its fantastic that we can use them, but its not obligatory for a great game.

Who's idea was it to res this thread after the huge argument one we had in Chat, or rather - both the arguments on the chat board?

Imo, UDK's better to use, but I had two-three years of FPSC experience. FPSC is easier to use. You won't make a commercially amazing game, or break any records, but it's kinda fun to mess around with, and you'll learn the basics of how a game engine works - shaders, polygons, getting scripts and such to work...

Personally dealing with some of FPSC's temperaments is why I went to UDK anyway. The right tutorials'll help you out shedloads, but it's still useful to be used to how it works - some of it can be technical for simple people...

FPSC... I would suggest taking a look at the following Projects:

Alpha Project by Lewis

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=154190&b=25

Euthanasia by Myself

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=166195&b=25

If that is close enough to next gen for you:

use FPSC....

From now on all "FPSC vs .... " will be locked and the poster will be put on post mod so no more, ask at a different forum.
