is there a simple way to tell if a object is being displayed on the screen and lets say not behind the camera?

You could use dbObjectInScreen(). If its a large object and close to the camera but also behind it, it may say its visible.

dbObjectInScreen
This command will return a value of one if the specified 3D object is wholly or partly visible within the screen borders, otherwise zero is returned. Even if the object is behind the camera, its overall size may partially clip the screen area.

Syntax
int dbObjectInScreen ( int iObject )
