Hi,
I understand the use of matrix to make terrains, and the get ground height command.

But, when I change the matrix to a .x model, how to find the height to set the character y position?

Drop the player above the terrain, apply gravity, check for collision, back off to last known good altitude. Peice of cake

Use similar logic for navigating ramps and stairs.

Try the collision DLL from nuclearglory:
http://www.nuclearglory.com/developer/db/kdll.html

It will do all the work for collision and walking on the surface.
