Erm...?? no their not. I know as 1) I'm English and 2) I been in loads of English castles.
You must remember soldiers in plate or mail glad feet had to traverse those stairs, so they tended to be very deep and large. Added to the fact they were made from hewn stone slabs, long before the days of reinforced concrete, so had to be very thick to support their own weight along with the weight of metal clad men running up and down them.
The stairs tended to be thin at the centre pillar and very wide at the walls, a bit like slice of pie or cheese triangle etc so the main weight of each step (the wider part) being supported by the walls.
