I made some spiral stairs with sketchup. there are 4 models with the sketchup maps provided, so if you want to you can make some changes to the model. i did not make a UV map for it. but used a textures from CG textures.

Beautiful and useful stuff! Though I think the steps could be a little bigger.

Actually, in most English castles the steps are about that size.

Nice model BTW

Erm...?? no their not. I know as 1) I'm English and 2) I been in loads of English castles.

You must remember soldiers in plate or mail glad feet had to traverse those stairs, so they tended to be very deep and large. Added to the fact they were made from hewn stone slabs, long before the days of reinforced concrete, so had to be very thick to support their own weight along with the weight of metal clad men running up and down them.

The stairs tended to be thin at the centre pillar and very wide at the walls, a bit like slice of pie or cheese triangle etc so the main weight of each step (the wider part) being supported by the walls.

Blackfox and scope thanks alot!!

Nbt. i know thats the model of your sewer pack. i was searching for spiral stairs. and the only 1 that worked for me was that model. but it does not fit in my medievil game, thats why i made my own.

about the thickness of the stairs. i agree that it could be bigger.
but again. that would not fit also in my game. i want to run up stairs smoothly. but ty for the advice i will remember that for my next stair model.

cheers

So am I (English, although I no longer live there) and my wife is an obsessive historian... Most defensive stairs were very steep and narrow so they could be defended and most defenders very rarely wore heavy armour because of the width of the corridors and angle of said stairs. I agree that the model could be a little wider at the edge but in most castles I've been to you'd only find wide stairs in the main bastions or in later castle where they were for show rather than defense.

Sorry, bit off topic..

...both points of view, regarding step size are valid. Different steps for different
purposes.

Functionality was very important in the construction of a fortress or castle...it had
to be, if you wanted to keep possession of it.

@SanXL,

Very nice work.

The DL is greatly appreciated.

Wow SanXL, these stairs are amazing! Many people (including myself) could really use these. Thank you, and nice work!

Cheers, Jake
