MilkShape 3D is an all-around good modelling program.

DO NOT use Autodesk 3DS Max until you learn advanced modelling.

Fragmotion is good for rigs.

LithUnwrap is good for textures and model conversions.

Why does life suck the life out of you?

Milkshape - $50 I think (Both)
FragMotion - $50 (Both)
Anim8or - Free (No animation - not the same kind at least)
Wings 3d - Free (No animation)
Blender - Free (Both)
UV Mapper Classic - Free (Mapping)

That's what I have off the top of my head

Animation isn't easy, but it's not super hard, it's gets easier the more you do it, same with modeling, I've only animated for a few weeks and it's getting simpler every time.
