Darkbasic Professional Demo Thread

First, I’d like to briefly introduce myself. I have been programming since the early 80’s. I learned by typing in code from magazines, trying to figure out what each line did. In all that time, I have only completed one game. It was a nibble game, programmed in assembly for the Atari 800XL. My point, I am a programmer and not a very good game designer. Well, I said I’d be brief so…

Lately, I have been going through some of my old source code. You know, the code you write while trying to learn a new programming language. I am also a purest so, I prefer not to use third party dll’s. Some of my collision code works just as good as sparky’s dll. I hope you don’t think me a jag. I still have a lot of learning to do. DBPro is great. And the people here are the best. Kudos, to all.

So, I have decided to start this thread. I will offer my demos so the newcomer as well as intermediate programmer may benefit . If anyone would like to join in, feel free. Since its for demo purposes, please include media you either made yourself or that is freely available. This is not a request thread so, if you do make a request it may or may not be answered.

My first demo will demonstrate various text commands. It also simulates a sprite with only image commands. Showcasing their limitation. See if you can figure out what it is? I wrote this the day I received DBPro.

I am currently experiencing technical difficulties. So please forgive me if I’m not able to reply, as quick as I’d like.

Brian

Hi!

I think this is a great idea for the newcomers, I hope other people think this too, so the newcomers can benefit from simple little programs

I think you are a little too stuck in "the old days"... I'm not trying to offend you or anything, I'm just pointing out that you may not be engaging the full power of DBP, mainly referring to this statement :

Quote: "I am also a purest so, I prefer not to use third party dll’s. Some of my collision code works just as good as sparky’s dll."

It is hard to change your ways, and I understand you don't like to use external DLL's, but you are really missing out on something. DLL's is what DBP consists of, DLL's are the things that make DBP powerful. Avoiding them is a mistake. I'm sure your code may run as good as sparky's, but what makes sparky's special is it runs blazingly fast. And no matter how much you optimize your collision code, it won't be anything near the speed of a DLL.

Also, did you know that every single command you use in DBP IS a DLL? Ironic really.

Anyway, that's the news I had to break to you, now on to some more pleasant stuff. I'll look into your demo as soon as I get home, and post some feedback

Thank you, TheComet.

I appreciate your criticism and no offence is taken. I guess I should have left that out. I didn’t mean to imply that I don’t use third party dll’s. Or that this thread is for pure DPRro demos. I have some code to share using them as well.

Quote: "Also, did you know that every single command you use in DBP IS a DLL?"

Yes, I know. Dll's are the nature of windows programming in general.

Well, I should get to work on demo2. I need to restructure my code so it will be easier to follow, instead of the spaghetti code in the first demo.

Cheers
Brian
