Firstly, the box doesn't have enough vertices/faces/triangles/Polys (or whatever u wanna call them) for the lighting to work.
IanM's Matrix1 plugin set has an improved
make object plain command which allows you to set the number of columns and rows used to create the plain.
Secondly, You need to hide light 0 (The default scene light), or edit its settings so it's not so overpowering.
Here is my fixed code, altho you need to walk the camera backwards to see the effect.
Rem Project: Light Test

//create objects
`make object box 1,5000,50,5000
make object plain 1,5000,5000,100,100 : ` <--- I added this line here.
//position objects
position object 1,0,-100,0
//lights
hide light 0 : ` <--- I added this line
make light 1
set point light 1,0,0,50
set light range 1,2000 : `<--- I edited this value, was 400
color light 1,rgb(100,100,100)
//loop
set object light 1,1
do
control camera using arrowkeys 0,2,2
