Guyz,

I have read on several different posts that in creating outdoor levels one needs to have Billboard trees around the edges...I just want to ask a stupid question - What are Billboard Trees???

A flat plane with a texture on it.

It is very effective for creating large quantities of trees (and other background pieces) without lag, as they are extreamly low poly.

A billboard is basically a plane or a box with a tree texture on it.

as you can see here. The black will be invisible, so you only see the tree

Usually it's 2 planes , one rotated at 90 degrees and placed in the middle of the first.1 Plane has one side and needs to have flipped normals so you can see its front and back, therefore when each plane is 2 polies, the total is 4 for 1 'tree' (2x2, or if you use more than 2 planes , multiply the number of planes by 2).

The reason I personally use 2 or more planes is because if you are looking at a plane at a 90 degree angle (or something very similar) it'll sort of disappear from sight. That's where the second plane comes into play.

Yes.You can also make them with 2 more sides by rotating the extra 2 sides at 45 and -45 degrees.

Apply it to just Pic A.
Then make a duplicate of that plane, and rotate it 90 degrees, and line the center points up.
Export, and you have an incredibly low poly tree, or 'billboard'.

games like far cry, Just Cause and crysis used this allot because they had massive outdoor scenery's, when you got close enough to a certain distance shroud all the trees close enough turned from billboard to 3d so you could enter the jungle and it wont still be 2d haha

Its a very good effect and i wish FPSC supported it well. But that is a different matter completely.

getting it to work shouldnt be to hard but thats not the problem, the problem is FPSC cant handle outside areas very well at all so you would struggle to get your scene to run at a good FPS

I think maybe a community pack of nothing but billboards would be sweet. I would organize something like that, but my time is very limited. If someone else started it I'm sure people would contribute.

This is interesting and stunned me: I was playing BF:BC2 when I noticed that the grass actually used this method, but not a straight angle but a more X like angle.

I have a whole library I've been building up with plants, trees, grass.

I might just release it for free.
