In screenshots i see printed polycounts. do they just look up in a 3dmodeling package how many an object has and then just print that or is there a command or function for this?

statistic(1) returns the number of polys on screen. It's a hidden command in DBC.

hmmm... when i make a box and hide it and then unhide my poly count goes up by 24, this should be 12, or is it DBP that makes the box with dubble sided poly's?
