As part of one of my current projects, I've been tinkering around with custom "bullet holes". Starting small, I swapped out the medium and large bullet holes (scorch 1 and 2) in the original texture set for slash marks and altered the gunspecs of a couple weapons to use them.

In game I'm still getting bullet holes in segments.

So what actually controls what sort of impact mark a weapon is going to leave on a segment in-game and what can I do to force it to behave like a sensible object and get slashed up?

The scorch/hole is actually two decals overlaid on each other... One is for the hole itself and the other is for the damage to the material (wood, metal, etc.) Make sure your material decal doesn't have a hole in the texture.

Check out this really old post and you can see the result of similar modification. The file link itself is long dead although the v2 version was included as bonus material in model packs 9&10.

Ahhhh.... OK thanks!

Hunh.... Still running into an issue.... Even tried deleting the material impacts entirely, but i'm still getting bullet holes in-game.

BAM! figured out my issue: the alpha masking? Yeah, I guess that's what it would be called. I took the original bullet hole file, re-built it from scratch using original "blob" designs for the material damage. End result: I'm still leaving bullet holes.... But they're in the shape of my re-designed blobs

I don't understand why though... The material damage decals I created are entirely hole-free, yet they display holes in-game.
