Hmm... I don't know if I understand your post fully, but try TruSpace. There's a link in a thread in the general talk forum.

Ah yes... the infamous serial number... You have to find an e-mail address registration thing on Caligary's site. Sorry, but I don't know what I clicked on to bring it up.

You can try JTEdit, a free 3D modeler (pre-1.0). It supports modeling/skinning/animating .x files.

Looking through JTEdit - it's definately worth every second of the download.

I'm really diving into the JTE tutorials. Isn't it true that DBClassic doesn't support mesh based animations, and if so how do I plan accordingly if I animate a 3D object in JTEdit?

I'm somewhat of a noob to the 3D stuff so bare with me. I think it would really stink if you can't deform the mesh (which could simulate breathing, etc.). If limb-based crap is the only thing allowed then do individual meshes comprise individual limbs if you save your work as ".x"?

Thanks for the comments.

The next release will have a little explanation about segmented frame vs. skinned mesh modeling in the First Use tutorial. DBPro supports skinned mesh and segmented frame models, DBClassic only supports segmented frame. (What are the most common terms for these? I fear I may not be clear on this.)

Currently, if you look in the User's Guide for the Modeling page, I have some explanation of how to do the two types of modeling. Then you can look at my hokey Frame-Based Finger tutorial under the Old Tutorials sub-heading in the Tutorials section. This tutorial includes doing a simple animation.

I'm hoping that JTEdit can eventually become the editor of choice for DB users, at least users that don't have the money for the professional tools, or for users who want a tool more focused on game development. It will be a one-stop tool for modeling, skinning, and animating, and eventually world-building. However, JTEdit is still pre-1.0, so I'm fixing bugs as fast as I can, getting tutorials in shape, and beefing up or adding new features. Already I think I have some features that beat the competition, but unfortunately I don't quite have the stability yet, and some features still need some beefing up to match or exceed some other speciallized tools.

I'll have a new release out later this week with a number of bug fixes and small enhancements. Then shortly I'll be beefing up my texture mapping features (i.e. adding the means to save out a bitmap with the texture mapping wireframe (to save you from having to Print Screen to the clipboard the texture mapping view)), adding more face splitting options, adding boolean operations, and so forth (watch my diary forum for details).

I've not yet heard any feedback from people about how well my .x format writing works for DBPro and DBClassic. Has anyone actually done a whole model using JTEdit? If so, could you send me some feedback about how it went during the modeling process, how well it worked in DB, and your suggestions? I'm neither an artist nor DB user, so your feedback could be very helpful in improving the tool.

Thanks to all who have given me feedback already!

I'm impressed. I'm quite sure I'll be using this tool to generate my models as soon as I feel I've got a good feel/grasp of it. It'll take time, but I'm sure it'll come. Thanks for releasing this opus for free!

I did open a .3ds file a friend of mine made with Rhinocerous successfully with your program and even played around with it. I hope that's good news.

One thing, however. I'm finding some capatability issues in DB (I have classic). When I load the "horsie" model (saved as .x), that came with JTEdit, in the media browser it displays absolutely nothing and boots back to the main window. When I open some of the other .x models that came with Dark Basic in JTEdit, JTEdit cuts off their legs or lower polygons and acts like I just asked it to read a model the size of a planet. In other words, the models are so incredibly huge when you load them in JTEdit that they go beyond the grid! Could it be something foolish I'm not doing ?
