In a 3D game, you would tend to do this by making a plain from multiple polys. as the line (texture on the plain) extends, you add more polys to the line. The calculation of the positioning would involve bezier curves (or C-splines).

This is exactly the same principle you need, but creating a road...

excellent i was looking at this earlier. looks kinda complicated though coz im still a noob. might take a while to learn.
