Hi, I've just recently gotten into DB, working on my first game (Conflicted Galaxy: Decimation) and well, I didn't want to spend lots of money on high-end software. For all the noobs out there, here is an awesome list of free, open source, royalty free(I think) software. Google these titles to download!
GIMP or Gimp Shop - basically photoshop, but free. photoshop is like $600 I think!
Wings 3d - best free modeling software i've found. exporting as .x doesen't work too well, I export as .obj then convert it with Lithunwrap.
Lithunwrap - used in conjunction with Wings 3d.
Audiacity - Decent sound editing program, especially since it's free!
