If I was just starting out like you I'd start with Wings 3D. Saves you learning more than one package.

Go with Milkshape, it does cost around $20 but it can model, animate, and exports to a vast amount of formats. If your looking for an all-in-one package, it's hard to go wrong with Milkshape, plus it also has a 30 trial period.

Outside that I've heard a lot about gmax, however there's alot of talk if it can be used in commercial games, and I think it only exports to one format, don't quote me on it though.

DDR is the best form of exercise money can buy.

Hi.
I would go for either Gmax or Anim8or.
both are free and have worked just fine for me.
As for Gmax, you can get a plugin for it, to export 3ds files.
So I would say free and good!
Good luck on your hunt.

If you cant afford milkshape then you should download the ones that suit your modelling style and test them for yourself.

You will find that each one has different compatability issues and different problems crop up each time you convert from one to the other.

I prefer milkshape for its compatability tho, allthough it does have limitations you can traverse your model over to milkshape later on.

A good file format to use in conversion is the obj format or the 3ds format if your really stuck.

for best results u want to end up with an ascii x or a binary x file.

Well, I've tried both Blender and gmax, and they both seem to be powerful programs. From what I've heard, though, Blender is absolutely free and they're constantly working on updates for it. They're also in the process of improving the interface, so that may be interesting. Plus there are tons of user-made plug-ins available for Blender as well.

I don't know which one to recommend to you, but something about gmax makes me a little nervous. I guess because it's not totally clear (at least, not to me) whether you'd face any legal trouble if you used it in a game you made.

But hey, if you haven't already, try them both out and make your decision based on what you find. I know that probably wasn't much help, but I'm leaning more towards Blender. Just my opinion.

Before you jump on to Blender 3D, do some homework and see which model formats are currently supported. If you choose a modeller that can not support the formats that DBP uses, then you're stuck trying to find a convertor as well.

Cheap/free programs with .X exports include Anim8tor, DoGA CGA, magazine editions of truSpace (or so I've been told.)

I have a question on that, I thought trueSpace 4.3 or higher was required to export X files and animation.

I used Anim8or before I had money for MAX... Just go through the simple online tutorials and you should be an expert in no time... Plus, the interface is similar to MAX... so if you're planning to jump to MAX in the future it would help... GMAX is just like R3 MAX... only I'm not sure the free version allow you to create models...

The Gmax license restrictions have already been argued over on these forums, but I guess it's easy to miss these things.

According to the Eula that comes with gmax there's no restrictions on the content you make (just read it, it isn't that long).

This means you can use it for commercial gain with no problems.
This has been confirmed by discreet on there own forums.

I think using any version of Truespace for game export (including 4.2 and up) is either not possible or very frustrating according to the reports I've read.

Many users are complaining that Gamespace has this functionality, while Truespace 6 doesn't. Caligari are bringing out a gamepak for Truespace to fix these issues, but this will cost money.
