My ten year old son is extremely interested in learning to program. He has a copy of Dark Basic and has gone through all of the tutorials. He is struggling to make the next step and do something on his own. Does anyone have any suggestions that could help him?

Start by modifying an existing tutorial or example program and build up from there. It's a bit easier than starting from scratch.

Try and help him figure out what he wants to make and then divide it into a series of production "milestones" or goals for him to achieve.

For example, step 1 could be loading the player object and being able to move it around the screen using the arrow keys. Step 2 could be adding an enemy object and checking to see if the player and enemy collide. Step 3 could be allowing the player to shoot a bullet, etc.

My recommendation is starting with small steps in a 2d game, my first game was a reworked version of PONG in qbasic and I loved it so much I spent hours trying to figure out how to load sounds with my friend and we were so happy and excited that we sold copies for a dollar at school. We made 5 bucks, that was the best experience in game programming I'd ever had. Check if any of his friends are interested, they could have their own development company (sorry for long post, was in your son's same situation 2-3 years ago and love when new people decide to begin programming--keep the game market alive!). We would trade off playing HALO, and programming, and when one of us was confused on why it was not working the other one would usually look at it and figure it out; two minds are more powerful than one, three is better.

Good luck!

just as zircher said, i would start off my modifying programs....
i learned so much by going through the caverunner example and examining each command and finding out what it is, how it is used, and if i can change it(seriously, changing the code helps ALOT).

the first real program i made was pong(3d because they were easier for me to learn than 2d). But anyway, good luck!!
