I don't know the technical term but I can describe it. In the FF series (mainly 7-11) there are still backgrounds were the user runs around in but is 3D still. They look exactly like pictures, but there interactive. Here's a screen shot of what i mean.

Notice that it looks like a still picture (like i said) but he can move around in it in proportion with everything else (very important). Also, there are obstacles. When you run a certain distance towards a wall, u actually hit it!

I would like to know how in the world can i create this with darkbasic. If you need to know, i'm using Gmax with the popnfresh plugin. I'd also like to know how to include animations into that and more importantly start cg's from that exactly frame and scene. Thank!

I LOVE GMAX

It is a picture. What they do is make the actuall world in 3d.. render it.. Use the image, as the background but us a REAL LOW poly collision box area where the collisions would be. I don't have the time to explain it in full, but I will try later.

They model is invisible, and they just make it so that you can walk behind certain parts of the picture, while the camera is facing the acutal 3d object the same way as the picture is so that you can't tell.

Yea... i'm starting to see what your saying. Hey Tigerdane, I think your on to something, finish what u were saying.

And wait, it's a background image, but it's a picture and it isn't a picture at the same time? One of u said it was and the other said it wasn't. Which one? Both? Neither?

...both your questions have already been answered.

It's a picture.

There is ALSO an invisible level there for collision, and ONLY for collision.

There's probably some special code so that you can walk "behind" certain parts of the picture, or draw the picture over the character to give the illusion of depth, like walking behind a column.

This shouldn't be that hard to understand...

No, your right it shouldn't. I think i get it now. I'm sure i'll have more questions in the future, but thanks for your help. Any ideas on what that code would look like? And does anyone else veiwing this have any more comments?

You could do this with plains so long as the camera does not move. Plains, and any sort of collision that you like. Array/Sprite/Box/Zone/Distance any collision will work. Plains in front of other plains to go behind things.

thats a great idea, ofcourse it is, it's from the FF series, never played them though. how would you go about the player behind the sprite and in some cases in front of the sprite? multiple sprites would be needed i think

Yea, very good point. See, isn't that a sweet idea for a game? And it's all possible because of dark basic!

Yes he did, and I started a thread on the exact same subject a while back. And I also abandoned the idea due to the fact that:

a) The frame rate dropped dramatically as you have to paste the image every loop

b) There was, to my knowledge, no way of getting an area to occlude the 3d being drawn.

why should you paste the image every loop ? just texture a plain with the image

The plain would then have to be scaled in and out of the screen, the 3d objects would otherwise (and would probably still) intersect the plain and pass throught it. Forsee these things.
