The Chamber of Artifacts: 3D Compo July-August

As a professional archaeologist you've seen and done it all. Battled and escaped Nazis, jumped over pits of bloody spikes, been chased by giant rolling boulders, drank from sacred wooden cups and then there was that one crazy night with aliens. But nothing before now could prepare you for what lies in THE CHAMBER OF ARTIFACTS!

The 3D combo for Month's July to August is to build an artifact to put in this chamber. It can be anything from human remains, evil traps to a steampunk watch. Anything fly's as long as it can be considered an artifact.

Anyone entering can upload a final model and I plan to do a huge render of all the artifacts in the chamber room. You can build multiple models but only one will be considered for judging.

The compo deadline is set for August 31 at 11:59pm EST.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with and good luck!

Hi Josh,

I am definitely getting my creative juices flowing for this one!

Just a quick question, the image you created, that shows the chamber in which the artifact is due to be 'discovered' in; is there anyway of us getting this model file so we can showcase our artifacts on the actual pedestal? Or, I could always create my own chamber similar?

Unfamillia

EDIT

I have started on an idea i had (probably the most obvious idea for this compo!)

Anyway, here it is in two different variants.

Which one do you think i should continue with?

That's what I was planning in the end. Placing all the artifact submissions in the scene and making a giant render. The scene isn't complicated, just a bunch of primitives.

Would this be considered an Artifact?

I can't make up my mind as to what i want to do for this competition.

@Willow

Thats a nice Myan Calendar. Is it a plane using normal maps or is all the detail actually sculpted?

Hi Willow,

Sorry for all the questions; i am confused. I know you said it isn't a plane and that you are using normal maps. But, what i originally meant, was, Have you modeled a round plane (a disc) and applied a detailed texture map or have you actually sculpted all of the details by hand?

There is no real point to this question, just to quench my own thirst for knowledge!

It's a cylinder and a detailed texture map

Thanks.

I like some of your model packs. It appears as though Cosmic has taught you well. Your texture work is incredible!

Anyway, a bit off topic.

All Cosmic did was to show me how to make a box when I first started. I did the rest myself because I am just stubborn that way.

Josh, just asking, can you have more than one final model in a screenshot? Or is it one only?

Yah! Make as many artifacts as you want, but you'll need to choose one to be judged.

@Josh

just to clarify, are we supposed to make an artefact that is game ready? Or a nice looking model regardless of poly count?

Also, while modelling the mosquito in the amber, i used the node editor to get a nicer looking render (I use Blender). Will all this information be transferred over when you try to create a large render containing everyones entries? (plus, your render time is going to be in days rather than hours with everyones entries in one scene!

As long as you send me the 3ds files and maps I can put them together. If you have special materials for rendering I can easily recreate them, just send me the basic numbers. Also I have a beast of a machine, not to mention truespace is able to multi-thread up to 4x. A single frame render won't take much time at all.

Ok I'm DEFINITELY entering this! I love Blender, but I've never really done anything renderific with it, only make models for my games. This will be a chance to really show my skills and experience with the program

The only thing is, what about materials and node-editor settings? Surely you can't copy EXACTLY the visual style from Blender over to Truespace. What if a lot of the style of my artifact is in the material and node-editor settings?

That's exactly my issue. I use the Cycles render Engine in Blender to get a more realistic lighting. I don't think that all of the settings set out would transfer over to a different 3D engine?!

I can send you any files you need, but, i can't see how it would work properly to get the same effect.

Or, we make our own beauty shots, and then josh can figure out another way..?
Just make sure you can get a similiar, if little less good looking look with "basic" settings (without 3rd party programs)

I have been learning how to use wings3d and gimp, and have gotten up the courage to enter a competition.
I really have no experience rendering, but I'm sure Josh can make it look good.
If I submit it in 3ds format will it keep the UV and Materials data? How do we submit the Model?

My artifact may look like a Celtic Cross but it is actually an ancient astrolabe used for navigation.
Just Google "Celtic Cross Navigation" and you can learn how to use it. It's better than a GPS.LOL

Very awesome. Yah if you export as a 3ds it will keep the uv data and export the texture with it. Please zip up everything and send them my way.

Josh & Quick thanks for the high praise. I have a few finishing touches to do.
I struggled with Milkshape for years, but now I have the hang of using quads in Wings3d it is much easier.
This model was a learning experience for a bigger project.
We need to get some more people to enter this competition. I don't want to win because of lack of entries.

Edit: I made my final changes. I wasn't happy with the flattened torus knot on the base.
I found a plugin for wings3d to deform a mesh from an image, with a little fiddling making
images in gimp I was able to put a good trinity knot on the base. The model is made up of
4 pieces the base, cross, ring and center pin. The ring rotates and you take readings thru the holes.

Legend has it that the Celtic Astrolabe can be used to navigate to Merlin's underground Lair.

Its been years since Ive bothered with these competitions but Im going to give this one a go. Im going to model my own chamber to better showcase the artifact though, although I understand the chamber most likely wont be considered in the judging.

Probably would have looked a lot better if I had used a higher poly model, but I'm happy with it.

Anyway, 2nd attempt at making a gem/crystal render in 3ds max.

I really stuffed up with the materials and the render on my entry. I simply could NOT get the gems to look like real gems. I've seen several examples of gems done in Blender on the internet but I couldn't find a any examples of the values used to make them look like they did.

However the contest WAS for the best model, not the best render, so in theory I still have a chance. Even so I can see SitD's Celtic Astrolabe winning hands down

Final results(analysis by David):

3D Master: Stab in the Dark Software
Notes: great over all model and texture and the proportions give a good sense of scale.

Best Model: unfamilia
Notes: Both the skull and gems in his render are well modeled.

Best Texture: Willow
Notes: A good example of how a good texture can make even a simple model look good.

Wow, I can't believe I won. This was the first model I have ever submitted I guess now it
can't be my last. I would like to thank everyone who entered and the judges.
I learned a lot making this model. I used wings 3d to make the model and gimp to make the texture.
I guess being a winner I can be a little pushy and ask about the final render.
I have yet to master rendering and was anxious to see all the artifacts in the chamber.
Congrats to the other winners.
I will definitely enter the next one.

Voting was pretty close Clonkex, so may I suggest jumping in the next compo. Don't worry so much about everyone but have fun and challenge yourself to make something you haven't done before.

Good luck!
