I am doing some tuts. from the community guide and one is on huds. At the very beginning it says unzip your hud image here. Is there a template hud image somewhere that you use? do you have to make one? If so how big? I do know how to use photoshop ok.

I know what huds are and have been reading the manual and community guide but maybe need someone well versed to explain a little how to create the actual hud. Can you just copy a hud from huds folder and rework it for your needs?

I have searched forum and read stuff, maybe I am just not getting it!

It may be a couple of days before I can get back to this due to work so...

Thanks in advance

@ dragon,

There are a few different way to make hud's. Id be happy to help you but I need some specifics. What would you like the hud to say?

Is is a word hud like "This door is Locked" or is a picture hud?

Get gimp or paint.net preferably both. They are easy to use and believe me you only have to know th ebasics to make huds.

Whether it is a picture or a word hud the process is basiclly the same.

Lets use gimp.

Open Gimp and go to file>open>thegamecreators>files>languagebank>english>gamecore>text and open any of the files, I usually use the doorlocked hud.

We are going to just edit an exsisting word hud. Though you can make it from scratch for the purpose of walking you through the hud making process this way will be easier.

Most photo editing software uses what are called layers.

After you have opened the file you should see the hud with a checkered backround and to the right of the screen a window marked layers. If you do not see the layers window, I believe CTR+SHIFT+L will call it up.

next be sure that you have the layer selected. In the toolbox select the text Icon. Click on the hud and delete the text. Now choose your font and color and size. enter your text.

Now you are going to save it in the same folder you took it from but name it something you'll remeber. Save as a TGA.

Now you just have to edit the filepath in the script of the object you want to display the hud.

So in the script where the hud is defined. should read something like
:state=0:hudreset,hudx=50,hudy=50,hudimagefine=languagebank\english\gamecore\text\yourhudhere.tga,hudname=yourhudhere,hudhide=1,hudmake=display

There are a few other ways to script a hud where you dont have to use photo software.

State=0:state=1
:state=1,plrwithinzone=1:etimerstart,state=5
:State=5:fpgcrawtextsize=20,fpgcrawtextfont=verdana,fpgcrawtextr=200,fpgcrawtextg=0,fpgcrawtextb=0,fpgcrawtextx=50,fpgcrawtexty=40
:state=5:fpgcrawtext= your message here
:state=5,etimergreater=5000:state=1

Just attach to a trigger

Thanks Troutflies I don't think it can be any simpler than that, thanks.

Your name troutflies makes me think you are a fisherman. I don't trout fish. I live in Chicago so I fish in this area and in Canada mostly for Bass, Walleye and Northern Pike!

Thanks again!

I have been playing around with it off and on since then, mostly off but I come back to it now and then. I am also into 3D graphics and learning DBP and C++ so I bounce around a lot. I don't know what I want to learn more but am really interested in programming and graphics.
I am a truck driver, I own my own truck and don't have a lot of time anymore. I do have some time on weekends and once in a while a little time during the week.

I have actually been a member here since 99 or beginning of 2000 Right after DBC came out I found it on the web and joined. I was away for a while or changed PC's or something and forgot my login info or something, couldn't log in so I just re-joined and made sure I wrote things down so I would not forget
