hey guys, I'm new here although I've been trying to work the program out for about two weeks or something and i'm going to order full version of DBP woot! I was wandering, Is it possible to load .jpeg image files from programs like Adobe Photoshop onto DBP? It's just that paint sucks for drawing and stuff and Adobe Photoshop is way better for texturing etc.... Erm, ok, to the answer!

In dbpro you can load BMP, JPG, TGA, DDS, DIB ,PNG. According to the help file PNG, DDS and TGA will use the images alpha channel for transparancy. The other file types use a selectable colour for transparancy.

I prefer to use PNG files, lossless compression and an alpha transparancy.

The problem with JPG is that it is a lossy format. Not a problem for nomal use but in game it can cause a few problems.

if he has photo shop he can save JPEG files to maximum quality
which happens to be as good as bmp.
Why Use JPG over BMP?
size - a 1 mb BMP can be turned into a few kb JPG.
This is very nice when making a big game and space on your PC is limited.
JPG FOREVER

Cheers artos!

Hey, we have the same Avatar!

Yeah, I almost always use .jpg's because of the size issue. If I need a better, more clear picture then I use .bmp's.

Remember though, bitmaps compress considerably in file size wheras jpegs barely reduce at all. So your final .exe, .zip or installation file will be pretty much the same size regardless of which image format you use.

In answer to your question Akira, and an extra question i'm using JPEG files because the drawing for Adobe Photoshop is actually easier, and also I want to know is it possible to save .bmp files from diffrent programs apart from paint? I don't know alot about all this File stuff.

@Akira
jpegs set to maximum quality almost have the exact bitmap as the original.

with bmp,png you know for sure that the image hasn't loss any data.

If you aim at nothing you'll hit it every time. 806mhz AMD Athlon Processor. 384MB memory.

@KNau
bmp files normally are not compressed.
gif, png files are compressed but lose no data.
gif files are limited in colors
a jpeg of an image is much smaller than a gif file.
jpegs have no real color limits.
jpegs have lossness (thats how they get the small file size)
jpegs are good for photo (where you can't visually tell the dif)
gifs, are good for line art (where lossness would be noticable)
i know gifs are not used in DB, just covering the gammit.
so, if you want no lossness and all your colors, bmp, or png.
if you want a smaller file between the two, png.

PNG also has alpha channel support which can be very handy. JPGs, because they most likely will blur edges, can look like complete crap when transparency is needed.
