Hi,
I just installed linux on a secondary HD on my computer and I want to install Wine but I need a C compiler (It says I need gcc, cc, or cl)

I thought that Linux was supposed to come with a C compiler

Well, anyways I need a C compiler that I could easily plop into my "bin" folder and hopefully it would work.

I'm using Mandrake 9.1, KDE (if that matters)

I wanted to learn C++ but then I started having nightmares.

You should have GCC - may need installing though or something.

I've not seen a distro of Linux yet that doesn't come with a C++ compiler included. It's like the most vital part of the whole package. You probably already have it. Doesn't Wine come in an RPM or something?

Cheers,

The RPM thing didn't work so I tried this. I can't seem to find a compiler on my computer. I'll keep searching

By default on every distro I've ever seen gcc and g++ have been in the /bin or /usr/bin or somewhere else in your PATH. you should be able to just type g++ or gcc. How did you try to install the RPM build? It should be a simple matter of rpm -i winepackage-324-version-123.rpm assuming you have the neccessary dependancies. But most distros also include WINE with them, have you checked in whatever installation/package manager Mandrake uses? Never used Mandrake myself, so I can't help you there.

What happens when you just type in wine?

try specifying the full path to notepad.exe e.g.
"wine /mnt/win98/windows/notepad.exe"

I think last time I used wine it required some configuration, have you done that?

Might be as well to look at the faq if you haven't allready.

As for the compiler issue depending on the installation options some distros don't install any of the dev tools. I have no idea how to do it on mandrake but there should be an installer that allows you to install more stuff off the cd. Install all the relevent packages.
