I'm trying to find out a good way to create a HUD for a game i'm creating. Something small that can occupy a corner of the screen or something.

You can use sprites, paste image, or 3D objects that float in front of the camera. Each has their pros and cons, sprites tend to be slow when you are mixing 2D and 3D (more rendering passes?)

Just do a search for HUD, about a half dozen threads will pop up.
