Hey!

I thought I'd finally re-write all of the network code (properly this time) for this game and get it released.

This game will also be available on the upcoming game console OUYA (still very much a WIP though), that's why I created the thread about finding a better name.

Anyway...

le doodle

http://doodle.com/enfbgpxu3rhby8d3

le download

Download: LightShip_Beta_1_8_2.7z (Right-click --> Save As)

Intro

I need the help of as many people as possible to test the online capabilities of this game.

The game is intended for 20 players max, so there should be plenty of space for everyone.

If you are willing to help, please enter your name in the doodle above.

What is the game about?

You are a UFO, and you need to drive around on a map of tiles. When you do this, the tiles you drive over become yours. The catch? Other people can drive over your tiles again so they become theirs. The aim of the game is to have the highest count of claimed tiles when the timer runs out.

The game has power ups and teleporters to make it more interesting, and the graphics are pretty neat, if I do say so myself.

How will this work?

Someone with an open port and a not-crap computer will have to host the game. The rest of you just need to download the game and know the IP address of the host in order to join.

Add me on skype:
. (Two underscores, not only one!)
I'm still debating the idea of having a skype call with 20 people. Meh, probably yes.

Requirements

*A windows computer, XP, Vista, Win7. Not sure about Win8
*An internet connection
*DirectX 9.0c Aug 2007 or later
*512 MB of RAM
*1.6 GHz single core CPU

Troubleshooting

If the game doesn't run, contact me at any time (this thread or skype) with a screen shot of the error, and I will help you.

How to play

*Use the arrow keys to steer
*Use the space-key to activate power-ups
*Use the space-key to teleport

How to make maps

NOTE: The host has to have the maps. If you want people to play on your map for this beta test, send them to me at least 1 day before the actual meetup.

screen shot:
http://imgwiz.com/images/2013/03/25/TKpeQ.jpg

General controls:
*left-click = draw
*right-click = flood fill
*middle-click = scroll map
*scroll = change brush size

Tools:
*Empty Space - draws an empty space
*Tile - draws a tile
*Wall - draws a wall
*Spawn Location - Lets you define where players spawn at the beginning and after they die. You need to place as many spawn locations as there are players. If a spawn location isn't defined, players will spawn randomly.
*Restrict Spawn Location - If players don't have a defined spawn location, you can tell the game where the player's shouldn't spawn with this tool.
*Restrict Power Up Spawn Location - Power Ups spawn randomly. With this tool you tell the game where they shouldn't spawn.
*Trigger - Allows you to place trigger regions on the map. When players enter this region, the attached script is executed.

Misc

The game will eventually be released on the OUYA, and this prototype version will be released for PC.

If you want any maps you make to appear in the release (PC version and OUYA), please send them to me personally and I'll add the to the map pack. By submitting your maps, they become property of the game itself.

If you liked the game, or want to request a feature, or report a bug, I'm happy to hear it!

I shall participate in 'le online testing'!

I only checked the Sundays in the doodle, because I know I probably won't have time on saturday this and next week. But maybe I will be home, who knows.
You put 19:00 as the time in the doodle, which timezone is that based on? Timezone of le internet? Because we for example are both in Europe (and same timezone) but not everyone is... keep that in mind.

Also, a skype call with 20 people from around the world who have most likely never talked to each other before and might very well not be native english speakers? Yeah, sounds like that'd be awesome. xD

Edit: Just noticed the doodle shows the timezone as GMT+1:00. Oh and European Summer Time starts on the 30th March so the clocks will be advanced here, but in the US this already happened on the 10th, right?

Ah yeah, timezone is GMT+1.

Most of the participants are actually Swiss, so the discussion may very well be half German half English.

What I really think will happen though is my sound card will overload and you'll just hear a huge amount of random noise and clipping.

Was just editing my other post, might as well put this here then...

Just to avoid confusion in case there are both Europeans and Americans or people from somewhere else helping with this. Whatever.

Half german und halb deutsch? That sounds wunderbar.

Oh ja! We vill play zis game and probier zu speak over ze internet.

Completely off-topic, but I just want to throw out there that I love the way Germans speak English. It's just as fun to listen to as Scottish English, and the naturally "well thought through" cultural aspect of Germans adds to the way they phrase their sentences. I'm not bashing, quite the contrary!

@ all

A TS3 server has been set up for this event. The IP address of it will be announced in this thread a few hours before it begins.

Also a heads up, 1 game only lasts for 3 minutes, and I'm guessing the event will last for up to an hour at most (depending on how addictive the game is), if all goes well.

OK, first testing of the game is this Saturday, 19:00 GMT+1.

If you miss it this Saturday, there will be another one next weekend.

Hey comet, I wanted to try your most recent version here but how exactly can I change the res? Is it locked? My monitor is 2560x1440 so it's a stretched mess for me

Yeah, the res is locked.

My god, I completely didn't think of that. Wait a few minutes while I fix it.

We're using a TS server, so make sure you download Team Speak 3 if you don't already have it. Or if you don't want verbal communication, you can also just stick to typing in Skype and in the game chat.

Again, testing is right now.

I had to fix another bug, so this is the version we'll be playing on:

http://0xff.avxc.net/stuff/LightShip_Beta_1_8_4.7z
TS3: 84.200.67.170

Sorry for the confusion, and I hope to see you there! Once the game server is running, I'll post another post with the IP for people who don't have skype or TS3, so they can join too.

Well, that was a lot of fun surprisingly. We peaked at 11 players and the game ran smoothly, minus just one bug which crashed the host at one point.

We played for a little more than an hour, so it seems this game has some addictive properties. I need to add a few more things to make it more fun before the release.

Thanks a lot to everyone who played it today!

In two weeks I'll probably do this again. I hope more people join next time!

Sorry for bumping this (grave digging is probably the preferred term),.

I meant to upload this video but forgot to. Development has stopped until my exams are finished. The language spoken in the video is Swiss German, a crude offspring of German.

Just wanted to thank everyone who participated in this test again, and hope we can do so again once all of the bugs are fixed!

Hey, Comet, what means "will be on Oyua?" DBP is compatible?

Nah, a friend and I rewrote it in Java using libgdx and the Android SDK so it would run on the OUYA.
