That one I've unheard of. Interesting."

This game was way ahead of its time and set the path for other console shooters in the following generations. It's technically superb and built on top of the already great Goldeneye engine (very large single and multiplayer modes, bots, highly customizable, decals, dynamic lighting, physical vehicles, post-screen effects, etc.). But I still prefer Goldeneye because it has that nostalgia factor and because Perfect Dark could be considered a sequel (minus the Bond story and setting).

Rare was just an incredible studio before Microsoft aquired them. Some people of Goldeneye/Perferct Dark fame went on and created Time Splitters, another great but often overlooked shooter franchise.

Here is a very intersting article by one of the developers of Goldeneye.

Hmmm... my top ten would be hard to do, I've played so many very good games. I'll give it a shot anyways.

Note: These aren't in any particular order.

- Age of Empires II : Conqueror's Expansion
- Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare
- Fallout 3
- Team Fortress 2
- The Walking Dead (by TellTale Games)
- Bastion
- Mass Effect
- Bioshock Infinite
- Dishonored
- Planetside 2

WTLD has been put on indefinite hold.
A new project is under initial development now.

I thought Perfect Dark was pretty well known?

Rare games:

1. NY Warriors (Amiga)
2. Kirby in Dreamland (Nintendo)
3. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64 i think)
4. G-Police (PC'97 Psygnosis)
5. Kengo: Master of Bushido (PS2)

I only discovered Kirby a few years back with an emulator. But it was instantly so much fun I wish I knew about it when I was a kid. Although, I do believe it was quite popular back then.

I thought the last game on my list was just called Bushido Blade, but those are all on PS1 and I played a PS2 version, so I think it's Kengo. Video clips might look boring, but it's a great fighting game. Mainly because you won't lose to a 10yr old button mashing. It requires precise movements and combinations to do even simple attacks. You learn new disciplines by defeating the masters of other dojos.

I agree that talking about games we like is a good way to introduce others to them, but when hundreds of people's opinions are collated we end up with the same old Zelda, Mario, Final Fantasy VII and GTA at the top every time. Talking about games that are not so "popular" is far more interesting. I'm actually surprised Minecraft isn't on the list.

Games that I've enjoyed or had a big effect on me:

3. Tetris
4. GTA III (should not be that high!)
19. Metal Gear Solid
40. Gran Turismo
63. Fallout 3
64. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
97. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
98. GTA: Vice City
99. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
127. Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee
UNLISTED LittleBigPlanet 2
UNLISTED Beneath a Steel Sky
UNLISTED Imogen
UNLISTED Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
UNLISTED The Warriors
UNLISTED Gun
UNLISTED Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
UNLISTED Hitman: Blood Money
UNLISTED Mafia
UNLISTED Mafia II
UNLISTED Elite (how the hell is that not on there!?)
UNLISTED Grim Fandango
UNLISTED Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy, if you're an American)
UNLISTED Heavy Rain
UNLISTED International Superstar Soccer '98
UNLISTED Golden Axe

Games I want to play:
48. Deus Ex
117. Fallout
160. Thief
UNLISTED Baldur's Gate
UNLISTED Journey

Just remembered I actually bought Deus Ex and Fallout on GOG.com! Off to play them now!

P.S. There is only one game that comes in 1st and will never be surpassed: Chess. It is so perfect, but sadly it is not exciting enough for many people to appreciate. I kind of felt the same when until I got into it recently, wow there is a reason why it has lasted so long.

I will try to list some games here but I find it very difficult.

There are many games which I have enjoyed in the past. Games that I have spent far, far too long of my playing because I enjoyed them so much. However, when I have gone to play them again I haven't enjoyed them, the magic I felt during the point in my life when playing them was gone. I put it in part to me growing older and my tastes changing, but also because as the industry has evolved so have my expectations of games. Things that could hold my attention before don't because I expect more.

The only games that seem to be excluded from this are old school point and click adventure games, which I find I can go back to and still get a great deal of enjoyment from. Point and click was always my favourite genre of games.

Also when I was younger multi-player was everyone sitting in the same room. Cheating in Golden Eye by looking at other people's screen to see where they were. Finding ways around the swear filter in UniRally so my friends and I could laugh at the stupid name we gave ourselves. Passing the controller around playing worms. Hot seat in Civalisation and messing around while other people took their turns. A lot of what made those games enjoyable was the fact that I was playing games with my friends in the same place. I would say that perhaps if I really looked into those games that it wasn't actually the games that I enjoyed so much as it was the social aspect of the gaming.

If I were to try and list my favourite games of all time a lot of them would need to have the rose tinted glasses caveat.

Actually I won't try to list my favourite games. I'll just put one game down that springs to mind as always being awesome, whether playing solo or with friends. It is also one that I have played since my youth and it still retains everything that was awesome and makes me smile:

I remember when my brother and I completed Golden Axe together. I think that was the first game I ever completed.

Can anyone recommend some good old PC games? I have missed out on a lot of great games.

How long did you give it? I played the original GTA again, and for the first 30 minutes or more I was thinking "This is so slow and boring, I can't believe I liked this game." but then I adjusted to it and had more fun with it than GTA IV. There certainly is a big difference in the way games feel today and how they played ten-fifteen years ago. Games today mainly give off a tawdry feeling to me, they are rarely as engaging as the old stuff. But old games can be frustrating and poorly designed (especially GUIs) so it's a trade-off but in general, if you're willing to put a bit more effort in I still think the older games are better.

Not sure if you can even find these anymore. As a child I spent a lot of time on retro64.com, when it was just starting up. The most innovative and classic games I played were the following.

* Platypus (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=195314&b=2)
* Cosmo Bots
* Break Quest (Nurium Games)

Obviously, Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein should also be checked out.

If you like strategy, check out StarCraft (not the new one, but the 8-bit one).
