Quote: "When Microsoft first unveiled its IllumiRoom technology at CES, it did so in an unusual way. The software giant traditionally reveals its research projects in short, scrappy videos accompanied by research papers and a lot of technical jargon. IllumiRoom was different. The chief technology strategy officer at Microsoft, Eric Rudder, joined the Samsung keynote to showcase a video of an augmented reality projection unit designed to extend gaming onto nearby walls. The demo showed off a concept that appeared finely tuned, using what felt like a marketing video."

So basically you just hook your xbox to a projector and point it at a wall?

I don't really like the idea, all the extra light outside the tv on non-flat objects is way too busy and makes it harder to focus on the game itself.

That's why it's so cool--it uses a Kinect to detect the geometry of your room\furniture and adjust the projection to your perspective.

I'm fairly certain they don't have confirmation that this will in fact be part of the next Xbox. We'll find out soon.

Didn't know that. That Kinect gizmo seems so advanced, and it was created as just a toy!

I think it will be optional, as ps eye, or in a "special" bundle.

It won't work with the PS4, that's for certain. It'll be an XBox peripheral.

I think the idea is that it's kinda meant to distract you from the screen. In fact, that is the entire purpose for its existence.

I just want a console, TV, controller and some games. None of this gimmicky stuff. If a game needs this to make me feel immersed, then the game has failed at this aspect

Thats a realy good point. Still, this technology is pretty cool. But it will probably only be a handfull of titles supporting it

They say existing games support it, like portal.

Yes, I watched another video of it in action and they were testing it on Borderlands.

How could anyone see this and not be interested or intrigued by it? Get off your high horse! The "mouse" was a gimmick at one time too, but look at it now. You all complain how everything is the same, but when someone goes out and tries to do something new and exciting you blast them for it. What does anyone have against EXTRA immersion on TOP of an already amazing experience. It's optional too, so if you really don't like it... don't buy it.

If we said, "Everything we have right now is perfect and we don't want to experiment and find something better," then we'd still be munching raw veal and berries in a cave.

Yes, the regular computer mouse was once scoffed at and considered ridiculous.

A person like me would never be able to use this without being severely bothered by the fact that it's projecting over an uneven surface. Screens must be pretty perfect for me to enjoy them, and rally this technology makes the screen in the middle look out of place and even a bit irritating IMO. The technology itself is really cool though, I'll give it that.

Not every device with this initial reception has become incredibly popular, now has it? I wouldn't put the generalization on this device.

It's so bad!

Also there was a (philips?) TVs with back highlight, and some PC games has some kind of lighting tech support too. But alas, it is not popular.

Of course bloody not! Do you expect a 100% success rate with experimentation? "Yes, we tried to innovate and it failed, so we don't do that any more."

You have a point. I'm not saying this technology will never take off, and it IS really cool, but I agree, it will most likely need some improvement before it goes too far, just my prediction. What we need is holograms, you see.

Interestingly enough, when that concept was evolved into the Wiimote it turned out rather well

That's the point of this device, it uses the Kinect 2.0 to determine the structure of your room, and adjusts what it projects so it looks perfect from wherever you're sitting in the room, providing perfect, near 360 degree visual immersion.

You know that bit in MI4(?) where they had that screen which took the position of the security guard and adjusted the image on the screen to have perfect perspective? Well Illumiroom does the same thing, but on a 3d surface.
