I believe I have solved the issue. It seems that the cable has to be in a specific position in order to work properly

This might be kinda difficult for me to put into words, so bear with me

I have hooked up my xbox 360 to my computer monitor for convenience. I am using a vga cable for xbox and DVI for computer. If I want to switch i just press a button. However, when I turn the xbox on and switch, it does not work. I think it is because when I turn it on (this happens on my TV too), it turns on, but does not go to the dashboard and sign in. The green arcs should spin around the power button but this does not happen unless I go into the proper source (For example it is HDMI on my tv) so I am stuck in a loop. My xbox will not sign on because I am not on the right source, but I cannot get to the right source because the xbox is not on. However, on the TV downstairs, it signs on without going to the proper source. It's very irritating and now I cant get onto the xbox to fix it...

Pictured: The grey VGA cable leads to the xbox. The white DVI cable leads to my computer

Video of issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgC0dBZtEKw

To clarify: The xbox does work on the monitor. The problem is the fact that the xbox will not actually sign onto the dashboard for me to view the screen

I really couldn't make much of this. You're connecting your Xbox VGA cable to the DVI input of your monitor? This won't work, VGA is analogue whereas DVI is digital - unless I'm missing something.

The xbox is connected to the monitor and does work. The issue is that the xbox will not actually turn on for me to switch to VGA input and play games on it

Dodgy xbox VGA cable? Perhaps move the power strip so it isn't sitting on the the connector.

I use this same setup and there isn't anything I need to do to make it work. The xbox just starts up as normal and my monitor displays the VGA signal.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

How do you know it works if it's not displaying anything?

I know it works because I disconnected both cables and inserted the VGA cable afterwards and it displayed the video. I think thats how I did it, but I cannot recreate it

I believe I have fixed the issue, at least for now. The cable had to be in a specific position for it to work. I think I have it in the right position now. This is what it was doing yesterday:

Although the quality sucks, I'm assuming thats VGA limitations. At least it works

DVI is a nice hybrid between VGA analogue mode and its own digital mode, as far as I know. That's why cards that output DVI only can be easily used with monitors that input VGA only.

Indeed, the digital format that DVI uses is really similar to what HDMI uses, again as far as I know.

To connect my xbox to monitor I use a HDMI cable in conjunction with an audio cable.

Why? HDMI contains audio information too?

But to answer the OP issue, when using HDMI, the xbox will not turn on until it detects an HCPI compliant video device. This is for copy protection. If you don't use HDMI at the xbox end, you won't have this issue.

My monitor doesn't care too much about audio information.

Don't you mean HDCP?
