Steamworks is now available for all developers, regardless of whether or not they are on Steam. This is really really cool.

That is awesome news! When my current project gets further in development, I will definitely look into incorporating some Steamworks features.

I wonder how something like auto-updating works if the game itself isn't on Steam.

It seems you can do everything but actually sell the game through Steam. Which is really cool, because you can use Steamworks matchmaking and VAC instead of rolling your own anti-cheat or matchmaking system.
