Hey everyone!

Was just wondering what people like to program with the most and why...for me I love programming in Visual Basic, HTML, PHP, and DarkBASIC.

Visual Basic: Is my favourite choice though, because I just love the resources out there on the net for it, and it is really easy to get into it.

Well, definitely DBPro for game development, but I prefer VB for application programming. Ultimately, though, I'd like to be fluent in C++ because it's great for both.

DB Classic is my current favourite. I am happy to have used nearly all of its commands, and I can often sit down and write programs first time, without bugs. I can also program in VB, but I only have VB5 and it is a bit useless for games.

Macromedia Coldfusion - It's what pays my substantial wages!

Also PHP as it's really easy to use but so powerful.

DBPro for games but yet to complete anything decent.

VB6 was a favourite couple of years ago but gone off it now.

DBP - Best for games

Done some work in VB (Calculater...We Rock ReD_eYe!), but it's just not my choice for games.

Currently thinking about getting into Delphi.(Downloading V7 from website right now to give it a try.) Any opionions on Delphi?

C++, is of course probebly the choiced language. Unfortuantly, I can hardly do anything with it.

Right now DBP is probebly my favorite, only because it gives results fast.

and with dx9 sdk for managed code you can write true DX games in vb.net, unheard of in prior versions of DX and VB.

enough said.

In order of preference:

1) DBPro for 3D & sprites
2) Visual Basic for applications
3) Visual C++ if I want to be dammed for all eternity (makes the sign of the cross and begs forgiveness)

is HTML a programming language? i don't class it as a programming language for some unknown reason, maybe it is because i use dreamweaver and only tweak odd lines here and there
but i have no preferences for programming languages at the mo' as i don't use any properly at the mo'
i was not overly keen on visual basic and i have just started to learn DB (altho i only have classic version st mo')

I am obsessed by Toasters - especially talking ones...bizaare really isn't it?

Pascal, cause I used to know it better than anything else. Right now, its DBP cause I'm more fluent in that, but I'd prefer to use C++ if I knew a little more on it.

There's a .NET version of Delphi now, too. However you can still create native executables for Windows (and for Linux). IE your users don't need the .NET framework.
Opposed to "pre .NET" VB versions, Delphi EXEs don't require any seperate runtime libs.

um, ok...

ok, how about this... How is delphi different to other languages, like you have DarkBASIC which is BASIC for 3D Games. VB which is BASIC for all sorts, but hard for 3D. and C(++)(#) which is psoably one of the most powerful languages there is to date.
So... where does delphi fit in?

Sorry if it's a newbish question, im just not too uptodate on languages other than DB.

C# is the most powerful language to-date, VB.NET is it's vb-syntax equivalent. Earlier versions of vb were absolutely inferior to C++, but all that has changed with the advent of .net technology. All things are now as they should be, equal. If anyone has any doubts, they should read up on the topics on the web. There are plenty of sites that review/discuss the new technology (non-ms sites). It's quite interesting stuff.

Delphi is a RAD tool that is based on pascal. I think it is Object Pascal to my knowledge, but i cant be sure. I havent used VB or VC++, so i dont know exactly where it fits, but Delphi is a viual RAD program, that allows you to create anything really. All you haveto do is code it in pascal and youre away.

It is a very powerful language, and can be used for games even, although it isnt much.

COBOL rocks!

Damn, they're probably still teaching cobol in some backwater college in the third world.

Personally, I only ever use DBPro because it's about as enjoyable as programming can be - I code in VB all day everyday for a living, and it's ok, but not the sort of language you'd use instead of DB.

Tony Hawks Pro Skater engine is written in Delphi. Yes it is Object Pascal an extended version of famous Borland’s Turbo Pascal (Borland has be awarded several times for this state-of-the-art compiler) and it is an all-around tool... really great.

Van B I would agree with you if you are speaking of VB6 or prior - have you seen .net and DX9 SDK for managed code (VB.NET, C#, mC++) ? A new game building platform has been born, but is still in it's infancy...

Just thought I'd put in my two-pennies worth of .Net discussion.

I've been using .Net for nearly 3 years now. Was VERY fortunate to be an official Beta-Tester of the product way back in October 2000 so it's like a second language to me now.

I haven't had any problems what so ever, the results it gives are more than enough for my work and the customers of the company I work for have also been taken back with comments like "I didn't think internet stuff could do that", "How is the program running of a web page then", "Well the screen shots look good, er, y'mean that's the program!!!"

CattleRustler is also right, c# is a damn fine language, although personally I've never got into it, but from what I've read, and the little experience I have had, it's a step up from Asp/Vb.net.

I'd seriously recommend anyone who wants to enter a career in programming to learn .Net. Despite what anyone thinks (I probably will get flamed for this!!!), Microsoft do lead the way in steering the programming market (having more than 75% of the worlds computing running on their systems and they have to really), and the next version of .Net and it's IDE (Whidbey), is even better.

You can program (on the fly) user configurations, so each visitor can have their own 'style' for your program, database handling is an absolute doddle (a few drags and drops, and you've got a full searchable, sortable, filterable database) and SOOOOO much more to list.

As a last sentance, from someone with 17 years experience in software engineering, DON'T be put off by silly comments on what .Net can do. I hope CattleRustler and other users agree, that the majority of developers who says .Net is full of bugs, really have a problem with their own code - a poor workman always blames his tools...!
