Android pretty much does this itself, except it will silently download and install updates in the background. I guess it would be nice if something similar were integrated into Windows, but then all programs would have to be part of some kind of centralised database, and I can't see that happening.

That's a great add-on for Windows! It's such a pain to have EVERY damn application running its own update "daemon", or whatever they call those memory thieves. It's a bit of a hack to get functionality that should be an intrinsic part of the OS, but hey, MSoft aren't implementing it.
I don't know why there is a GNU/Linux version though, since this has always been standard behaviour on GNU/Linux.

Windows 8 Metro already does this too.

But it would be handy when reinstalling all your programs onto a new windows install. (other than slipstreaming them into the build that is.)
