Hi geeks . I have a strange 'mosquito' permanent sound from graphics card when using 3D on my PC. Any card - ATI or NVidia. When executing any (DBP as example) 3D application with shaders, there is kinda mosquito sound, and it is changing it's tone if 3D objects (scene) changes it's on-screen position. WTH?

P.S. I think I can even play a simple melody on my card... omg...

P.P.S. the sound is quiet, stops as application closes, maybe it remind a sound of NES or SEGA "loading" "noises", but with permanent "tone" if nothing changes.

It is most likely coil/cap whine which is generated by the power circuitry on your GPU vibrating at its resonant frequency. Nothing to worry about.

Read up on it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coil_noise.

The other thing it could be is a clogged fan - open up the case and check.

Oh, thanks! It is definetly not the fan. I am so happy that it is not defect!!! I have it on different cards. And since I became hearing it, I was thinking of bad things, up to not using 3D.

My laptop was making whining noises when I ran this code:

It's probably because the GPU is drawing a lot of power since the game is running at maximum speed (uncapped frame rate). As The Wilderbeast says, there's nothing to worry about.

Sounds like something isn't shielded properly to me.

The majority of computers I have owned have done this well, and the extra power drawing seems to be a pretty perfect explanation. Nothin to worry about

Actually the way I found out that DBP uses busy-waiting when limiting the sync rate was because when running a simple app made in it my CPU fan started being really loud (dusty heatsink).

Yes. I get the same problem on my PC if I forget to cap the frame rate (some of my old demos were written on an old slow machine and capping wasn't necessary). I now usually cap the frame rate at 60 unless I'm specifically testing frame rates.

Yes, that sounds likely to me too.

Actually, I'll correct myself: StarCraft II fried a lot of graphics cards because their menu had an uncapped frame rate, and caused your GPU to run at maximum power.

If your GPU isn't cooled properly, it will overheat and die. If you are confident it's cooled properly, you have nothing to worry about.

Yes, I've noticed some commercial games really get the fans going even when there doesn't seem to be much going on graphically. You'd think they would pay attention to such issues (unless they've invested in NVidia etc of course ).

Err, so is it defect or slapdash?
