For Media Studies we created a movie, imported and edited it on the iMac computers at school using iMovie. I then created a 3D rendered intro for the movie on my home computer and exported it to AVI, however, iMovie can only import DV Stream files.

My question is, does anyone know a way I can convert an AVI (or even an MPEG) to the DV format that iMovie will be able to import? I'm getting pretty desperate here and have tried everything. The only help I can get anywhere else is "Buy Quicktime Pro" and I'm not going to do that for one 15 second intro.

talking about quicktime pro - u say u dont wanna buy it, well would u like me to lend u a copy of my quicktime pro just so u can sort out ur intro?

Exeat ... grab DivX, it should have the MPEG encoders for Dv format.
Dv is the DvD MPEG4 format mate - it also happens to be the MPEG format that DivX also uses ^_^ which is handy, eh

but i'm not sure if you need Pro to do it or not... there are probably some online versions, i know i found one recently whilst doing research on Motion Jpeg (MDEC) format... try doing a search on MSN for that as i remember there being one that does it.

Well the DV Stream that iMovie imports has a .DV extension, Adobe Premiere can succesfully export a MS DV AVI, however, iMovie still doesn't like that. Oh well, I think I'll just burn the iMovie files to CD then use Adobe Premiere to put them together. Thanks anyway.

Err DV is what you get from a digital video camera.

If you have a digital video camera and a firewire card record the avi to the video camera with premiere and then plug the video camera into the mac and capture the output.

@ arrow - yeh i suppose ur right it would be piracy.
i was mainly thinking of helping someone out who is in a bit of a pickle if nowt else worked.
but as there seems to be alternatives, all should be ok i hope?

Winch only when dealing with the DVI port and Video Camera's...
When it conserns a Media Player (iMovie/Quicktime for example) .Dv stands for Digital Video which is DvD format which is MPEG4.

^_^ trust me it isn't the only format for the PC which doesn't just have a single format meaning.

good example is that Motion Jpeg, which has 24 variaties (one of which is Dv) ... similar formats, slightly different headers and extension data.

annoying really - you know that there are 4 completely different MDL formats, there are also 7 completely different 3DS formats.

so really you have to remember to always check for the context of what your using to be able to know which version of the format you'll be dealing with. Extensions don't mean alot when you can't copywrite or trademark them

He is using imovie, in the context of imovie it is the dv format you get from a digital video camera.
imovie is not a media player but a movie maker.

In this context dv stream is just the apple equiverlent to microsoft dv avi files.

Yeah, The_Winch is right, the only way I could previously get footage into iMovie was by importing it directly from the Digital Camera. Hence why I'm having all these troubles getting a computer rendered movie into the program. Quite silly really, you'd think if they knew how to export to an AVI, that they'd know how to import also. Oh well.

Dv video cameras don't use mpeg4
microsoft avi dv stream files don't use mpeg4
apple dv stream files don't use mpeg4
DVD use mpeg-2 they don't use mpeg4
