Lemmi share my excitement with you.

As some of you may know i am making a robot. It is going to be a buggy bot guided with ultra sonnic sensors. I am using PICs to be the brains of the bot (A programmable microcontroller, a microchip). I am not using any PICs either, i am using PICAXE, these chips have bootstraps which means they do not need a specialist hardware programmer. Just a 3 pin stereo socket from a 9 pin serial port.

They doing have loads of memory and are not too fast, but they are good for the job.

On its own this project is very easy. So i am going to add computer interaction by way of a COM port. And i did it, well i can read a COM port.

So far i have only made the Ultra Sonnic modual and power supply board (it uses Mains or 9V PP3). Next i plan to make the Communications Bus, which will allow the computer to take over from the sensors and simulate inputs.

The ultra sonnics modual also sends data the distance data using a serial output. So using C++ i have successfully read from the port!!!

Which is huge XP Dont let any usermode programs read/write from the COM ports, so had to use third part drivers etc ..

Oh and even better news, i just recieved the motor assembly £35 for 2 motors + wheels

Keep your eyes pealed for more news

Sounds fascinating...

Someone should really plug Thief or Half-Life style AI into the sensory inputs of an advanced bot. Obviously it'll be very fuzzy, but it'd be a fantastic expiriment.

A very nice %it, indeed.

Half-Life uses way points. To make the bot respond in the same way, you'd need to make small radio 'stations' that placed on the floor would mimic the waypoints in HL. It would be quite hard because the signal from each "waypoint" would have to have some kind of identification, and target pointing. Still, it would be pretty interesting.

@martyn: Using sound as a communication method? Isn't there too much interferance? Unless of course, you test it in your bathroom...

will it have chainsaws and chainguns?
make sure to add a jetpack and some rocket boosters. Oh and a time-travelling device on-board would be nice too.

sounds fun!

TK-- aye, but I was talking more about sensory readings and translating them than the actual actions taken from that translated data.

Nah, just stick in a GPS system

Set it to read specific places on the GPS map, and you're away, you would program it to go up to your local McDonalds and order somethign for you and bring it back, lol...

Good work with the bot man... Keep it up.

A GPS system wouldn't work in your house.
Unless, it's a really BIG house o_O

lol

Ultra Sonnics are a ranging system, the eyes of the bot.

The connection to the computer is so that i can play withought having to chase the bot accross the floor

Anyhow, tests tomorra, so i need to revise. I will start the chasis tuesday hopefully, i need to think of a design...

what speakers are you using?
I was just thinking about what you'd have to do for the bot to "see" with it's "ears", but it's hard! Maby not with a pic though... Does this work? I mean, you'd probably get much better results under water...

http://www.robot-electronics.co.uk/shop/Ultrasonic_Ranger_SRF041999.htm

Its a unit, ultra sonnics are widly used in buggy bots for this sort of thing becasue it is very reliable. I get a resolution of 1cm, which is more than enough for what i need it for.
