Let's just say that I want to color particular sections of my model - not texture - but color. It is really easy to do this in Rhino - pick a surface and color it, but in Wings3D it makes it more complicated than it is. I also want to make sure that I can do this without making any UV data that would become external media when exported into a .3ds file. Could anyone please give me a hand?

By the way, I am pleased to report that I am achieving fantastic modelling results with Wings - I highly recommend it to anyone who can't afford to chuck out thousands of dollars.

In wings main menu
window > outliner
In outliner window
Right click of default > duplicate, do this for as many colours as you need.
Right click on a colour > rename if you want to name them.
Right click on a colour > edit material to change the colour.

Select what you want to colour on the model and then right click on a colour > assign to selection.

Then just export the model as normal.

I'm sorry to bring up this post again. I've been running into some serious outliner problems with my latest creation. I can never get the model to display more than one color. I do exactly all the steps the_Winch mentioned, and I can't get the ship to display multiple colors - just one. Yes, the model in wings does everything it should. Once I export it and load it into my program, it happens. In addition, if I import the model back into the program after the fact, it still displays the colors where they should go. Does Darkbasic, have a problem displaying multiple colors for one mesh?

EDIT - Okay, I think this may be a lead to solving my problem: I opened a model a friend of mine made in Rhino that was successfully outlined. When I imported his model and looked at the outliner window, I noticed that all the colors were in fact labeled with pyramids instead of the big "M" that associates other materials. When I look into my own model and try to do the same thing: I duplicate "objSphere" thingie (or whatever it's called) - I can't edit the color! :-\

EDIT2- Nother update, I've learned that the pyramid icons indicate "geometry" - whatever that means to the materials. I don't understand why the Darkbasic only responds to "geometries" to gain different color data.

Never Mind people, I solved my own problem. I discovered that geometry-icons actually refer to individual meshes. DB can only handle one color per mesh.
