I was thinking of buying one, and went to my local book store. Unfortunatly they don't have any that that I'm looking for. Well they an advanced modelling & animation and one on scenes but thats pretty much it. I was wondering if anyone knew some handy books for beginers on modeling & animation. That would be really great,

thanks.

I've bought 3 3ds max books and they haven't helped me learn anything. It's online tutorials you want.

I got both these books. They are pretty good, especialy Animating there i learned alot. Great one!
The problem with Modelling a Character in 3dsmax is that its aimed at this one character represented in the book. Sure there are some usefull tips and tricks but it should have contianed more diffrent approches on modeling. The book should have been namned Modelling this specific character in 3dsmax. Now i shall not complain more.

pauls books might be good for beginners and those who don't want to be serious about modelling, but they're layn out badly and setup wrong to be things to use to actually learn from.

They're more a case of schooling art improvments.
personally what i'd recommened is learning the tools and number of general techniques. That way your better armed from everything.

Trust me, you can get 10 books on 3D Max that cover 10 different techniques in detail, but you'd still be left with 10 techniques oftenly using the exact same tools.
Your knowlage doesn't truely grow, only your specifics for adjustments to things.

In otherwords, there is a helpfile for a reason, and helpfile tutorials for a reason ... and they're designed one hell of alot better by actual teaching professionals to enlarge your knowlage on the product rather than give you set paths.

but hey each to thier own

Anyone else read a load of crap like that before? Reading is reading. I dont think anyone reads a tutorial book and then move on to only be able to model those things. At some point a person has to make an internal mental leap. Not really that big or special either. Pauls book is written very well, he presents techniques in the form of 1 large tutorial. Its not like those who read that book are only able to model chicks with big tits and cybernetic implants. Reading a book with many good techniques doesn't limit you.

Gha, my keyboard is broken.

mmmmmmnoooo Raven is right, as usual.

www.3dcafe.com has taught me basically everything I know about max. Google is far faster than any index or table of contents.

oh no, it's certainly worth a glance ... but i wouldn't say it's worth the $40 that Paul's publisher sells it for.
has some good stuff i'm just not recommeneding it for anyone who wants to continue in the field is all

there is a new one by Fracais Jaques which should be good, need to find it but i don't think it's in english yet

They don't teach you all the techniques though and unfortunately there isn't a whole lot on low-polygon modelling which a lot of us here do.
