There should be several examples floating around the forums.

I think there's an advanced terrain demo on this thread.

Trees are typically either flat planes (billboards) which face the camera or full 3D objects.
Mountains are often added onto terrains as separate objects, like in Skyrim.

There are some free plants and trees here to play with.

schnupperfamily, you can use height maps, a painted picture black and white, that is generated by dbpro into hills. You can use any 3d software to create landscapes and import them into the game. You can also use matrixes to create terrain.
