Having experimented a bit more, the same thing happens on a built APK even if you force it to portrait. I did a logcat of a rotate (attached). There is nothing wrong that I can see for definite with the logcat but it does talk about the display being locked.

Further to this, I collected about six devices ranging from the standard Nexus 7 to a dirt cheap 7" tablet from various sources ; the Cube is the only one that shows this.
