3DS Max
Rhino3D
Lithunwrap
CharacterFX
Paint Shop Pro
Photoshop4se (don't like it enough to buy a propper version)
VANseam (no substitute for Limefly, but you get what your moneys worth)
VANtrans (if blending 128x128 textures are your bag then so is VANtrans)
Materialize3D (stopped working on me recently, but it was a really handy UV mapper)
DBConv (the only .3DS to .X converter worth it's bytes)

I used to use a demo of Deep Paint (well you can view the whole texture printscrn isn't illegal!) but it's not as easy as you'd think to paint in 3D, mainly because of sloppy UV mapping - but either way; I've gone back to PSP again.

tsk tsk...look at all that pirated software.

I use (and for good measure, I'll put what's pirated after each item, if it is)

3D
3ds max 5 (pirated)
Terragen
Used to do a LOT of 3D AutoCAD work, then I discovered max.

Graphics/image editing/touchup
Corel Photopaint 9 (but never Corel Draw)
MSPaint

Programming
Dark basic Pro
JCreator

Music
Acid 2.0
Fruity Loops 4.x (pirated)
Cakewalk

Website design
Macromedia Flash MX (pirated)
Notepad

I use them all very often, usually all on the same project. They work quite well together.

yeah, well i try to phase out how many people seem to have the $3,000+ software packages on a board like this.
it's probably best too, else we'll all get into that piracy fight that was around about a year ago...

Being broke is no excuse, there are several free packages out there that are quite handy.

Everyone has their favorites. My suggestion, if you're new to 3D modelling, is DoGA CGA as your 3D studio and Metasequoia v2.1 as a your low level polygon editor.

DoGA comes in several step/lessons L1, L2, and L3. It if free to download and has export to .X format. You only need to register L2 or L3 if you want to make AVI movies.

I used all this software, some more than others:

3D Modeling:
I used Anim8or first, then bought and switched to Milkshape. It is well worth it

Texturing\Skinnin:
Lith-Unwrap

Image Editing:
Corel Photo-Paint

This is all that I used to create Firewall, my latest game. Check it out by on my website. You don't need to spend that much money, the only thing that I had to buy was Milkshape. $25 (Besides Dark Basic)
